Military flyovers date earlier than 9/11, but before then they were mostly USAF/USN/USMC aviators who were graduates of the home team who’d do a “training flight” and land locally to attend the second half as honored guests of the school. That’s how it worked at my college in the early-mid 90s anyway. These days I get the impression it’s a much more deliberate thing by the Pentagon. ---

It goes back a bit further. In the 90s, the DoD had an advertising deal (of course, not described as an advertising deal) with the NFL to do those big midfield flag displays and have the players out on the field as the anthem played (they were usually in the locker room preparing for the game before then). But once you open the “Patriotism, Fuck Yeah” can, you can’t close it again. And in the wake of 9/11, the performative aspects did further increase, not just in football but across professional sports. ---
