While not a direct quote, the sentiment is certainly in line with Nazi policies of outrageously disproportionate, even cruel retaliation for perceived transgressions. It’s close enough to actual policy that somebody could have said it reminded them of this massacre and it morphed from there, spreading along with the outrage. Or somebody fed it into ChatGPT or something and it came back with something that seemed close enough to what they wanted. Either explanation fits. It’s pretty clear Noem and the modern brownshirts have no problems borrowing or outright stealing Nazi talking points, even if this particular case was not a direct copy. But I have to believe it is still worth holding onto the notion that objective facts and truth still have value. ---
