My guess is that the trump admin will make a big show of certain public raids and deportations, but the actual number of people being deported over the next 4 years will likely be fewer in reality than there were under the Biden administration. This is not to minimize the pain and hardship that the people who do get deported will experience. I think that regardless of the actual amount of active damage the trump admin manages to cause, the worst or longest-lasting damage will be the lies that become accepted as fact and the hateful mindset that becomes institutionalized. ---

First, I’ll just note that I have no issue with deporting people who have illegally overstayed their visa or otherwise come illegally into the country. (Up to the point where it causes an issue with the food supply.) I’m more interested in the question of how honestly this whole deal will be executed. Given that we’re just having our first raid, _after_ deportations already began, my take would be that these were all people slated for deportation anyways and that Trump is just coasting on Biden’s work, clearing the holding cells out of schedule. The flights are largely just for drama but have no impact on anything and weren’t necessary, since we haven’t increased our capture rate yet. That said, you _would_ want to clear out room _if_ you intend to actually increase captures so I don’t know that we can call the whole thing a fraud quite yet. If he’s starting raids in Chicago, that implies to me that he’s planning to hit the cities, anger the libs, but otherwise leave the bulk of illegal denizens - e.g. the ones working in farms or for Republican bosses - alone. He’s mostly targeted the ones who stand outside of Home Depot in urban centers, working for yuppie/liberal home owners. I’d note that, if you do want to hunt down and detail 10s of millions of people that you need to increase the budget for all of this. If Trump doesn’t want to have to wait a year, and genuinely wants to hunt down illegals, he should have had a day one budget request. I believe that’s currently MIA? And obviously no plan to prosecute people for hiring illegal workers? I’d just note that if anyone wanted to screw with Trump, they would just need to find illegal workers at Wynn hotels, and in the workforce of other Trump allies, and report them to ICE. ---
