> That’s a good question. It’s certainly within the reach of the MST3K talent (in my opinion anyway) to have written lines that visceral and poetic on their own: something that sounds like a gothic 19th Century naturalist. “Alas my force was spent…”, and all that. Sounds like Thoreau after a bad night in the woods. Or maybe Lovecraft, on any night.
>
> On the other hand, maybe the writers just cribbed a real excerpt of literature from somewhere and adapted it for the skit — which I don’t mind, as it’s still damn hilarious. Anyway, if it’s a parody of something in particular, I’m afraid I don’t know what of.

I have an idea…I’ll send Mike an e-mail, and ask him.

Great shorts moments:“A Day at the Fair”: As the kids are looking at the butterfly collection, the line is, “These will soon end up in the throats of Billy’s unwitting victims!”–I think I collapsed with laughter for about 10 minutes! “Money Talks”–BEN FRANKLIN: “Don’t sass me, boy!” “Here Comes the Circus”–“Oh no, they’re doing it CLOWN-STYLE!!” And who among us wasn’t totally creeped out by old-timer Billy Slater? Personally, I always preferred the industrial films and the like to the old movie serial episodes they did in the beginning. “NO SPRINGS!”

Sorry, one more. How could I have forgotten “Catching Trouble”: “Stop, Greg! Don’t you see, they WANT us to do this!” This short also inspired possibly the best host segment ever: “Catching Ross”.

I have to say that my favorite host segments are almost always the ones that are simply parodies of something that just happened in the movie. The parodies were particularly good in Girl with Gold Boots (“Don’t you know he’ll KIIIILLL you for that?”) and The Pod People (“He’s good.” “Good? He’s the BEST.”) but the best that I’ve seen was in Cave Dwellers. I laughed so hard during Joel and the bots’ version of the opening credits that I thought I was going to burst a vein.

This thread is immensely entertaining as well.

_Girl in Gold Boots_ was hysterical, especially when they had Crow doing his little strip tease and Mike’s freaking out. Then at the end, Brain Guy dresses up like one of the dancers in the movie and starts ponying.

What about all the names they came up with in _Space Mutiny_? Big McLarge Huge! Crunch Buttsteak! Fist Slabrock!

I’ll always feel grateful to the Misties for doing “Outlaw of Gor.” The filmmakers totally botched the Gor movies, and it was like manna from heaven to watch the movies just take “Outlaw” apart, piece by piece. Never has a more deserving target been targetted. And of course, there was the “Tubular Boobular Joy” song, already cited for its incredible silliness. But what of the Jack Palance drunken diary? The buffalo shot montage was also hilarious. Then the slave girl dance: “They look like whippets!”

Ah, so many memories.

I used to love how Tom was the “sophisticated intellectual” of the group, but put a scantily clad woman on the screen and he became a drooling adolescent. How can we forget his and Crow’s little dance when the two women got in bed together in “The Thing That Wouldn’t Die” (“did you MAYsure the TRAYsure?”) or his fainting spells during “Horrors of Spider Island”?“Horrors of Spider Island” also contained on of their best host segments–their attempts to crash the SOL to see if they would become languid and sex-starved like the women in the movie!

I will admit that I couldn’t get through _Red Zone Cuba_. I got about fifteen minutes into the movie itself and had to shut it off. I think the problem is that the movie wasn’t so much bad as just incredibly boring, and the boys didn’t have a lot to work with (other than generic Roger Corman riffs).

Yowza. This one really steps up to the plate - no more laid-back watching of the movie, Joel and the Bots keep up a nice pace with the quips this time. Tom Servo’s voice is still offputting to me, but… eh.

We open with our first MST3K short, Commando Cody vs. the Radar Men from the Moon, Part One. This episode is noteworthy for being the only time I’ve seen (and according to trivia sources, the only time it’s happened at all) the gang actually mess with the movie’s volume. Joel stands up at one point to clamp a lady’s mouth shut, and her singing is diminished in volume.

Outside the theater, the SOL is invaded by devil dogs, attracted by the satellite’s bone-like shape.

Signature riff:

(Joel, reading title): The Robot…
(Crow and Tom) Yaaaay!
(Joel) vs. The Aztec Mummy.
(Crow and Tom) Booo!

I’m noticing that Crow’s a bit more wishy-washy during these first season episodes.

One thing of note in **The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy** , as they say in the _Amazing Colossal Episode Guide_, is that it’s the first and last episode where they use “sound gags”. In one scene, while a girl is singing on screen, Joel covers her mouth and the singing is muffled. And in another, while men are standing with their backs to the camera, there’s a dubbed-in “peeing” sound. They decided not to do stuff like that anymore after that episode.

MST fans, envy me, for this weekend I discovered Volume 6 of the MST3K Collection containing four movies (well, three and a shorts collection) at a Hastings location marked for only $14.99. Woo!

It actually sounded to me like a parody of comic book narration … “flaring wild maw” sounds like something Stan the Man would’ve penned.

I think it’s a reference to the medieval “sport” of bear-baiting–a bear would be tied up in the town square and dogs would be set upon it while a bloodlusting crowd cheered. Just MHO, you understand. On to other things: what was the name of the episode with Peter Mark Richman as the secret agent looking for the spores? And, in that one, was Wendell Corey drunker than Peter Lawford in "Angel’s Revenge? 😛
