A couple years ago, I noticed that I, and several other friends, were having a bit of a bad time with things, so I started [The Ultimate Pick-Me-Up Thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=64378). It was quite popular for awhile, and then the great Crash of '02 occurred. For a year, there has been silence in the realm of the Pick-me-up thread. Since I’m in need of a bit of a pick-me-up, I decided to start a new thread. (The old one was getting pretty big.) I’ve been having a rough time with things, of late. I lost my job right after New Years, I’ve had a cold that won’t go away, I’m missing friends who lives hundreds, thousands of miles away, and I’m feeling like I can’t be anything but a disappointment to **Verrain**. (No matter HOW many times he assures me it’s not true.) This isn’t a grand scale “Oh God, my life is horrible.” I know that it’s not. There are so many people who’s lives are so much worse off than mine at the moment, people who’ve been out of work, with less prospects of getting another job, for much longer than I. People with sicknesses much worse than a cold. People who don’t get to see loved ones. I know I don’t have it that bad. But I also know I could use a few pick-me-ups lately. Hugs, jokes, flirts (don’t worry, there won’t be an angry **Verrain** knocking down your door. He knows I was a flirt when I met him, and I’ll be a flirt for all time! :))… anything. Just something that I helps me smile when I need to. And this thread isn’t just about picking me up. As with the previous incarnation, anyone who’s in need of a little pick-me-up of whatever flavor can stop in and ask for it. You don’t need to give details, you don’t need to say anything more than “I’m having a rough time.” If this thread is anything like the last one, there will be plenty of people to offer you unconditional support. So let me just start off with a general {{{{Dopers}}}} ---

You know, my first thought when I saw your be-smiled response to **ChiefScott** was, “how quickly they forget.” Oh, well. Hey, if it’s any consolation (which is what I’m going for), I was actually wondering the other day were a lot of the folks from _back in the day_ (well, as far back in the day as I go) were, yourself included. **TruePisces** , while you don’t know me from jack, I just want to say hang in there. I know some of what you’re feeling: I was out of work for 7 months in 2001, and ended up moving a few thou miles away to get a new job, so I’m away from my friends as well, and I worry that I can’t do anything for my wife. While no 2 people feel precisely the same things, I want to say that my thoughts are with you. **Steelerphan** , I have absolutely no idea what happened to that game. It just sorta died out. I’ve started in a couple more online non-D&D games (Three Amber and one White Wolf), but we haven’t gotten to the point of killing anything in any of them yet, so I’m kinda SOL insofar as the online killing community is concerned. Maybe I can talk **Verrain** into running a small campaign and see where we go from there. As far as your comments, you’re right. In the grand scheme of things, life is pretty good. It’s just hard to realize it through the darkness sometimes. I hope you work through your problems, too, and if you’re ever in need of a pick-me-up, just let me know. **NE Texan** , how else do you begin to get to know someone if you don’t start talking? I’m an equal opportunity pick-me-up person – both in giving and receiving. A mini-Dopefest some weekend would be a fantastic idea. There are a few of us in the area (and a few that might not mind coming into the area one weekend to get together with some wild and crazy Dopers.) Lets pick a weekend that looks good, find a place to have it and see who we can bring in. Not that the one in September is being cancelled. Uh-uh, no way! That’s my pre-wedding Fest, so it’s going on, even if I’m celebrating my upcoming nuptuals alone! 🙂 ---
