I also seem to recall something about Kansas having a smaller civil war of it’s own, but I don’t remember if that was before or during the American Civil War.

Kansas was founded by a bunch of people bent on stopping slavery. MO was founded as a slave state and the driving force for Kansas settlers was to stop the spread of slavery west.

So, again, tensions about slavery drives the show.
