Never heard of Teddy Boys, but the backwaters of the U.S. saw a similar phenomena in the 70’s. We called 'em rednecks in polyester leisure suits. Heck, I even owned a couple. The clothing shows do serve a purpose because they illustrate the materials, techniques, styles and patterns that the designers are playing with right now. Nothing really shocks me. I’ve already seen it all in Tokyo, where young people really push the fashion envelope. Personally, I find it rather fun to stroll down the streets of Daikanyama, Ometesando, or Shibuya and see how guys mix and match and layer the most interesting combinations of clothing. Yes, this means I have seen the meggings and shorts in action. In the US, going wild with fashion is somehow attributed with gayness, but I get the impression that in Tokyo, it is attributed to youthfulness. Or rather, a specific period in their youth; the time they are in university is probably the only period in their lives that it is acceptable to let loose, slack off, experiment with their look, and be “different” so to speak. ---

The expression on the models’ faces remind me of the expression on my face when I was about 7 and my mother made me wear a suit and tie. My guess is even those guys couldn’t wait to get out of those outfits. One of the majors at the college where I teach is Fashion. They have runway shows all the time, and the most popular designs are those that shock people and get ya talkin’. Not that anyone would particularly wear this stuff to Walmart when shopping for Pop Tarts, but pushing the proverbial envelope allows designers to experiment with trends to see what flies. “Who would ever wear those godawful calf-high meggings?! Ick! Oh, look - there is a more sensible pair that only goes above the ankle - much nicer…” ---

I thought, “Maybe in the Romance countries. It’s been a while since that sort of thing was fashion in N. Europe. In fact, I seem to recall the wearing of pantaloons instead of culottes being a revolutionary statement once–oh yeah, that was in a Romance country…” Looked at the images. Better looking than I thought. I don’t think a lot of middle-aged men will go for it. But young fit guys, why not? ---

I’m more bothered by the weird cut away baseball cap and the way the hems on the pants are higher than they have been lately. We should not be able to see that the men are not wearing socks when they are standing. These things bother me because both the stupid looking hat and the shorter hems will reach mainstream much more quickly then men in leggings.
