I wonder if any people on the planet survived as a society due to isolation (I’m thinking a small island nation, for instance). If it were me and I was seeking civilization and safety, I’m thinking I might commandeer an ocean-going vessel and take to the seas.

Do we know how the infection started?

I would think their best bet would be a small or abandoned prison. It’s designed to keep human type creatures in and out. Aren’t there lots of those out in rural areas? Bonus that they probably have lots of supplies on hand including weapons. Downside is you’re in prison.

Daryl has been shown to wipe down his bolts after use, though not with disinfectant - more like a cloth wipe.

I missed the previews for next week so maybe there was something there indicating otherwise, but I really doubt the two dudes Rick killed are attached to Merle at all. I see the group running into him and having a ton of trouble with the people he’s with down the road, with Daryl again being the feature player in those episodes.

Any guesses as to what will happen next? I think there’s going to be a showdown at the farm and most of Hershel’s crew is going to die, including Hershel as the farmhouse burns down, and the survivors will then hit the road.

And I haven’t been part of these threads (or the SDMB board in general, for that matter, for a loooong time) so I’m sure this has been answered previously, but maybe someone can help me out - what did the CDC guy whisper to Rick near the end of the Season 1 finale? I always assumed it was that Lori was with child, but events since lead me to think otherwise. Has any consensus been reached on this?

I’ll box it – it’s from the comics, which I haven’t read, but someone who has posted it last season:

The CDC guy tells Rick that everyone is infected. Which I guess means that when anyone dies, for any reason, they’ll be zombified.

If I got that wrong, please box the correction.

The guy Lori hit was definitely a walker. He is walking down the middle of the street with a clear view of the car that’s about to hit him. If he’s alive and was trying to flag her down, he’s even stupider than she is, and that’s saying a lot.

My guess is that Merle is like the Russian from the Sopranos – it’ll never be resolved.

> Heck, they could have all that many places. The countryside is filled with such farms. Me, I’d head for New York and chill in Donald Trump’s penthouse.

Georgie to New York is a pretty long drive in a post-apocalyptic world. There’s the obvious issues regarding fuel and zombie hordes, but then there’s also the roving bands of survivors looking to kill you for your supplies.

The farm, so far, has been pretty safe and secure, it is close to a town with some supplies still left, and on top of that, there is a veterinarian on site who can tend to most of your medical needs.

True, but few things are more fun for a viewer (or reader) than a good post-Apocalyptic road trip.

If it is as we’re speculating, that everyone is infected and you re-animate when you die, any self-contained environments would become nothing but zombies as soon as someone died.

You got that right. It’s not like they’re on the clock, either - no one has to go back to work after a two week vacation any longer.

The bar scene is the best scene this show has ever done. The acting, the dialogue, the resolution - all truly excellent stuff. Which makes it all the more frustrating when most of the show is bogged down in crappy melodrama and stupid characters. There’s real drama to be had in this world, it’s a shame we only occasionally see it.

They don’t need to make the characters stupid to create challenges in a post-apocalyptic world. The characters could be competant and communicate and decent people and still there’s plenty of storylines to mine. You see it in scenes like the bar - coming across new people, trying to assess whether they can really be friends or if they’re just feeling you out to take advantage of you - figuring out how to resolve that situation - that’s exactly the sort of thing that would be interesting about a zombie world. And it was extremely well handled - good dialogue, non-verbal communication, conveying to the audience why the characters are doing what they’re doing without hammering us over the head too much. Great stuff.

Unfortunately, most of the other 40 minutes was pretty boring, and retarded Lori almost offsets the awesome bar scene. This show hints at its potential with great scenes here and there, but wastes most of its time on stupid shit.

I agree with all of this. I truly don’t understand why the show is so schizophrenic with the brilliant and the utterly stupid - is it different writers? Network interference? Some scenes written on Friday?
