Sure, but while the Bahamas gets hit, specific islands aren’t wiped out every three years. But pretty much everywhere you go you’re going to run into potentially deadly natural events that can’t be predicted (huge swaths of the country are going to see, for example, massive wildfires over the next decade).

But not so much the Bahamas as small islands (in big enough water that the zombie horde can’t surround you) with access to well supplied land is where I’d be headed.

This is the great dilema: pioneer-style versus hunker-down-and-scavenge. If you can fortify near civilization, and become good at scavenging, you could enjoy many modern conveniences, including medicine, electricity (solar panels, batteries, genrators, windmills (Hershel has one)), food, water, creature comforts (wine, booze, tv, books) --there’s several lifetimes worth of that stuff already made and sitting on shelves in any city. You just need to be able to get to it and withstand a full on assault (whatever that looks like) from zombies and marauders. If you retreat to a wilderness or the islands, there will be less of a danger of attack, but you’re gonna be living like a caveman.

It’s Merle’s. There’s a scene in the early part of the season where Daryl says “keep your greasy rags off my brother’s bike” while they’re still on the highway.

I’m sure the Greene girls are teaching Lori and Carol how to do this off camera. It’s not something Andrea would show any interest in.

> Someone who has a timeline would have to speak up - but I think it’s only been at most a couple of weeks in-show since she peed on the stick. If that’s right, she’s possibly only getting to three months, and wouldn’t necessarily be showing yet.

A couple of weeks has to be pretty close. [Here](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=14798579&postcount=89) is a timeline I put together before the break in the season. I haven’t updated it, but I’m pretty sure there’s only been about a week and a half passed since the season resumed. But the week that Rick mentioned to Shane in the last episode is the first ambiguous amount of time in the whole show and kind of throws everything off. It could have been anywhere from 5 to 9 days, or even more or less. Any of those numbers would make sense to call “a week” during a conversation.

But anyway, yeah, a couple of weeks, plus or minus a few days.

Why would you have to “live like a caveman” on any modern, large enough island? There’d be enough supplies to last several lifetimes, including all the items you mention. A’course, you’d have to go on a zombie clearing mission first, but still.

Just watching it now, and my basic comments are;

Well, I guess stupidity _IS_ genetic after all (he gets it from his Mom’s side of the family), Carl being weapons-grade-stupid with “SwampWalker”, I have very little tolerance for the stupidity of the Motley Crew, so once Carl started taunting the zombie (Do not taunt Zombie Fun Ball!), I was actively rooting for him to get eaten, or at the very least, bitten…

sadly, he got away, and SwampWalker was cheated of a meal, good thing that TWD zombies don’t just eat Braaaiiinnns, because if they did, poor old SwampWalker would have still starved even after eating Carl’s clearly defective brain matter

Dale may have been a sanctimonious, self righteous, moralistic knowitall in this episode, but he didn’t deserve to go like that, I liked his character when he wasn’t being all preachy and self-righteous

I never really had an opinion on Carl up until this point, he was sort of like the scenery, just _there_, neither bad, nor good, basically ignorable, yes, even during the “Carl Got Shot” plotline, i couldn’t care if he lived or died

Now, OTOH, I want him dead, he was indirectly responsible for SwampWalker attacking Dale, he stole Daryl’s pistol, and lost it in the mud, even if they do find the pistol, it’s going to need some serious deep cleaning to return it to functionality, assuming the blued steel hasn’t rusted too badly\*\*

At the very least, the Motley Crew needs to be very clear to Carl that

1; he is a very large factor in Dale’s death, the responsibility of Dale’s death is clearly on _HIS_ shoulders
2; he has destroyed any semblance of trust the group had in him, and must earn that trust back, starting from a negative position
3; he is clearly not responsible enough for a firearm, he will not be permitted to use one until he shows responsibility
4; if anyone should be exiled from the farm, it should be _HIM_, at least Randall could be useful once his loyalties have been sussed out, here’s an idea, banish Carl and keep Randall

oh, and one crazy final idea, if they’re looking for a way to “dispose of” disruptive people, people with unsure loyalties and the like (like, let’s say Randall, or even Carl), and they don’t want to use up precious ammunition, why not use resources in the area, like, oh, I don’t know, the Zombies themselves?, dig a Zombie Pit, put in a couple zombies, and put the victim in it for disposal, after the deed is done, spike one or two of the oldest, most worn-out zombies and leave the “fresher” ones for disposal duties, never have more than two zombies in the disposal pit, just in case they try to escape, and keep one person on Pit Duty (have a rotation so everyone has to do their duty at the Zombie Disposal Pit)

…also a good way to keep disruptive people in line, behave, or it’s off to “The Pit” with you…

Yes, it’s a horrible, evil, inhuman idea, but this is the Zombie Apocalypse, not Happy Wholesome Family Fun Times, the rules have changed, the “Before Days” are gone, and not coming back, adapt or perish

(\*\*it also surprised me that nobody picked up the spent brass from the barn-slaying, centerfire brass is reloadable, and if ammo is in such short supply, I’m surprised they haven’t been reloading their cartridges, there has to be a reloading setup _somewhere_ during their scavenging runs, in an abandoned house? in a decent sporting-goods store? scrounge up some lead wheel weights from a mechanic shop (or from abandoned cars on the road), get bullet molds, and cast their own bullets, hey there’s a use for Carl, lead-scavenger and bullet-caster, sure there’s a chance of lead poisoning, but I don’t think the lead can make him much stupider than he already is

1. I’m not sure when Dale hasn’t been a moralistic know-it-all, frankly (think back to Andrea’s death wish days). He was a good voice of reason at times, but I always found him annoying.

2. Yeah, I’m not a gun guy, but even I couldn’t believe that the casings were there. One of the three main guys must be a reloader. On the other hand, it was a nice bit of subdued call back to the great zombie turkey shoot, which I’m sure had quite an impact on the boy idiot. Thinking about it a bit - that reminder probably led fairly directly to Carl deciding to try and shoot the walker.

> It’s Carl’s fault; give _him_ the gun and make him shoot Dale. It’s time he learned that his childhood ended weeks ago.

Nobody knows it’s Carl’s fault yet (except Carl).

Dale was really annoying me this episode, right up until he became Zombie Chow. Up until now he hadn’t bothered me, but wow, he was he ever a pain over the whole Randall thing.

And wow, what a little shit Carl’s turned into. Makes sense though, stuff he’s been through, that’s gotta fuck up a kid.

I was surprised Andrea was there at the little meeting in the house, guess Herschel must’ve overridden Maggie banning her from entering the house.

Speaking of Hersch, interesting how he’s now totally behind whatever Rick wants to do. He may not be delusional about the walkers anymore, but he’s also a bit broken by the whole thing, so it makes sense to me that he’d be that way. Nice scene with Glenn too, but I don’t know if Maggie would be nearly so thrilled that he basically just gave her to Glenn.

So, Glenn’s from Michigan? Guess that explains why he doesn’t have a bad southern accent. 😃

Herschal’s learned to accept that the world has changed & some pretty gruesome choices need to be make, but he’s not willing to make those choices himself. It’s just easier to blindly follow Rick. As for Maggie; she could do alot worse than Glen. He’s pretty much the only man around that isn’t; related to her, a probable rapist & brigand, or attached to another woman. Well there’s Daryl, but Glen’s cleaner (though Daryl would probally do better at keeping her alive).

Canning is fairly easy, but you do have to know what you’re doing or you’ll kill everyone who eats badly canned food.

>
> 2. If zombies can’t swim, head for a large river, get a large boat (or several) and live on it. Touch shore only to scavenge and in areas with large enough sightlines to allow retreat. Scavenge fuel so you can move up and down river getting supplies. Big enough boat and you can even get to the coast (assuming now dams in the way) and then explore from there. Get some speed boats and move to the Bahamas.

Those are good ideas - it would be good for them to actually KNOW some things about the Walkers.

You’ve given me an idea of what to do with Randall - lock him up at night, but have him go out and do dangerous work all day until he earns a place in the group.

It was interesting to see how Herschel was dealing with things - he has basically abdicated to Rick. I hope he gets his spirit back a bit after all the shocks he’s been through, because he was a whole lot more intelligent about a lot of things than our Motley Crew have been.

I imagine that Herschel’s family knows how.
You can’t reuse the lids, though. Something else to scavenge.

After eating canned tomatoes all Winter, they may rather be eaten by zombies. 🙂

How do zombies work chemically? If their faces and muscles rot away, I’d expect their internal organs would too, and they couldn’t digest eviscerated cows. In a few months, they would just rot away and cease to function.

I don’t think we should expect any explanations of how zombies work. Same with the questions about their speed or strength.

I’d love to have the gang come across a mad scientist like Dr. Logan next season. It’s a given that the government would’ve set all kinds of makeshift “zombie research labs” like Day had up. Hell, I wish Jenner had made some kind of off hand meta reference to a undergound lab outside of Pittsburgh. 😉
