The idea about picking out some remote islands to live on made me think of World War Z where they went to the bottom of the ocean in a submersible and saw thousands(? or was it just hundreds?) of zombies walking on the ocean floor.

And if ammo is running low, thats all the more reason to be scavenging. The premiere episode showed Rick/Shane’s old police HQ stocked up with weapons and ammo. Sure, some stations would have been picked clean by now, but I’m guessing Hershel knows about some locals who were probably armed to the teeth but are now dead/zombies. For that matter, there’s been scenes where abandoned military equipment is all around. Maybe an APC would come in handy.

Another factor in the ammo situation is that cartridge firing firearms (all modern long guns and handguns) rely on one fairly difficult to manufacture (for the home reloader) component, the primer, assuming the situation in TWD is permanent, that means that the supply of primers is finite and will run out, once primers are “extinct”, the modern cartridge based firearm is nothing more than a funny-shaped club of dubious utility or an oddly shaped spear

Flintlock black powder firearms, OTOH, just need flints (or other spark sources) black powder, and lead projectiles, they will remain useful long after the last primer has been fired

Isn’t Carl supposed to be 12? That’s plenty old for them to stop treating him like a wee baby child.

I said earlier that stupidity isn’t being punished harshly enough on this show - I stand by it. What happened to Dale addresses at most 15% of this episode’s stupidity.

How difficult is it to make percussion caps for black powder?

I doubt they’re planning that far ahead. They haven’t seemed to with most of their other choices so far.

If stupidity was properly punished on this show, everyone would be dead before Season 3.

Not sure, apparently you _can_ use those red ring caps for kids cap guns on the smaller percussion nipple port, but musket caps, I dunno

the thing with primer compound (priming material) is that it’s an impact-triggered explosive, and IIRC, is only safe to work with when wet, apparently primers/caps/etc are filled with a wet primer compound and then dried, i’ve heard of people making primers by using strike-anywhere match heads in some way and recycling the cup and anvil from a primer, but apparently reliability is far below commercial primers…

Is it _easy_ to do? no
Can it be done? I think so, but I don’t know the specifics

[Here’s an interesting vid](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvK9QlQtrKI&list=FLEUvpTG2rTB-PQvWpmAp3hw&index=14&feature=plpp_video) that shows how CCI makes their .22 rimfire ammo, and they show how they load the primer into the rimfire shell, i’d imagine centerfire primers and percussion caps are done in a similar manner

Oh, I’m not doubting that Maggie still likes Glenn, it’s just she probably wouldn’t appreciate her pops essentially giving her to anyone, like it’s his call instead of hers.

I mean, it’s like he practically gave Glenn a dowry in watch form.

On reflection, the sequence I would have gone with is:

Carl finds mired zombie, considers shooting it, then mumbles to himself that the sound might draw other zombies (i.e. he learned this from listening to the adults). Carl instead picks up a heavy stick and from a safe distance, whacks the walker. It takes quite a while, ten or fifteen hits of increasing force, but Carl eventually kills the walker.

Then Carl heads back to the house, proud of what he’s done. He goes looking for his dad, finds Rick hesitating to plug Randall, and shoots Randall himself. _There’s_ your horror, in some ways worse than a fairly run-of-the-mill gutripping. Dale was warning Rick about what they were turning into, and what effect it might have on Carl… well… Carl’s turned into a cold-blooded sociopathic killer _and that’s exactly what this kind of situation calls for._ Screw all the philosophy crap, let’s see a hardcore example!

That would have worked for me - Carl was looking awfully Children of the Corn there in the barn.

> You’re right. Now that I see it again it doesn’t make sense to me either. For whatver reason it lost interest in the still living cow, then lost interest in whatever distracted it from the cow when it senses Dale. Also how did _one_ zombie manage to disembowel a cow like that? :dubious:

Honestly, one zombie cornering a steer like that is bullshit. A steer that size is so much faster and stronger than a living human that it’s totally ridiculous a lumbering zombie could have caught it. Steers are young and high strung and they spook so easily a zombie couldn’t even have gotten near it. I could buy Rick’s horse being eaten in the first season, since it was simply overwhelmed by zombies, but the thought of one or even a handful of zombies cornering a steer is laughable. I mean, even the show kind of admitted that – there were like five people trying to round up the steers that escaped earlier, which is completely reasonable and expected.

Trust me. I spent about an hour on Sunday afternoon chasing calves a little smaller than that steer, and there is no way a zombie could have caught them. Unless the zombies were on, like, dirt bikes.

This show is so bad. Good lord.

The scene with the cow is puzzling. On my TV (not hi-def) the animal looked sick, not gory and torn up. You folks with better sets, did it look like a Walker had been at the cow? Like some of you, my first thought was zombie cow.

Then we have Dale in an open field, not seeing the Walker until it was almost on him. Couldn’t it be that the animal was sick, and the noises it made attracted Dale and the Walker at the same time?

The steer was missing its entire stomach. Definitely not just sick! Kind of amazing that it was still alive, honestly, since it probably would bled to death in short order.

Maybe it wasn’t from their farm, but from another farm, and collapsed after wandering aimlessly since the outbreak.

You know, a bum steer.

Remember this entire second season was sent off its current meandering direction when the entire group was taken by surprise by a zombie horde out on the freeway even though sightlines were relatively clear and they had a lookout with the high ground on top of the RV. Somehow this moaning horde went unnoticed until they were about 100 feet away.

Attributes of the zombie:

1. They have a top ambulatory speed of “just slightly slower than however fast the person they’re chasing is, for the first 20 feet, then the exact same speed.” This aspect of the zombies has been well explored.

2. They are actually invisible until the moment of greatest dramatic reveal. This aspect has not yet been thoroughly examined but it is strongly implied by reference.

> Cucumbers, tomatoes, and carrots would be the right vegetables to be eating from your garden in fall. I’d like the question of food to be found in local stores to be settled - I think there should still be a lot of food around, too, but if the stores have been picked bare, time to get all the fruit and veggies you can from the local fruit trees and gardens and start canning (if those haven’t been picked bare, too).

I’m not too sure about planting schedules in Georgia, but cucumbers and tomatoes are mid to late summer vegetables here in Wisconsin, depending on when you plant in the spring and how early you start them indoors. So, say late July to August/September and then until the first frost for tomatoes. In Georgia, I’d expect earlier harvest times for the tomatoes and cucumbers, with possibly a second, later planting to harvest just before the frost. Carrots would still be a fall vegetable, unless they were little, new carrots. There’s no way carrots from last fall would last looking that good until the summer.

So, carrots and tomatoes reasonable. Big, fat carrots? Weird and unusual.

Apparently it is the bad farming practices which anger me the most about this show. 😛
