I feel personally rebuked (in a good way) by this episode. All season long I’ve been predicting that Team Grimes was going to turn villainous, and here Fuckwit Gabriel is saying the same thing, obviously proving the contrary. It’s like having Lex Luthor give you an atta boy. ---

So, to recap what fallout we’re going to be seeing in the next two episodes: - Carol and Rick call out Alexandria’s doctor as being a wife-beater. - There will inevitably be a showdown between Carol and Rick and Peter. - Glen and Eugene come back from the critical supply run without the leader’s son because they had to leave him for dead. - Glen and Eugene come back from the run with Nicholas, the leader’s son’s best friend, who is a complete chicken-shit who Glen will nominate for getting put outside the wall and invited to never come back. - Abraham has taken over the work crew. - Father Gabriel has put a bug in Deanna’s ear that Rick and Co. are bad people who should be kicked out quickly and quietly. - Maggie has overheard Father Gabriel, and knows the shenanigans he’s up to. My prediction - Glen, Rick, Maggie, Carol, Eugene are going to try to take over Alexandria because the Alexandrians are useless, and Glen and Eugene realize that they are not only useless but actively dangerously useless. They will fail and end up burning the town to the ground and head back out on the road, realizing that their lot is never to be able to stop roaming. The REAL conflict is going to come from Michonne, who will not be on board with the rest of the gang. ---

What a weird episode. They have a system, and the system is abandoning your friends at the first sign of trouble. How did they make it this long? What’s it been, two or three years? They lost four people a few weeks ago. Sounds like they lose people all the time. How many could be left? It’s not very realistic. Of course, cannibals isn’t very realistic either. Infinite zombies. I thought there weren’t supposed to be that many zombies around. Why isn’t a herd pressing against the walls at all times? What was that piece of plastic Gabriel stuck in the bible before tearing it apart? Hopefully Deanne will realize Gabriel isn’t right in the head. Nah, probably not. ---

I think the Writing Dead use some kind of “Mad Libs” template for scenes like this: The group enters a large, dark \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ (place). It seems empty at first, but they find a bunch of snarling walkers trapped in a \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_(noun). They don’t kill them, because “Hey, they’re contained, and they won’t bother us. We’ve been in dozens of situations like this before and they always get loose and kill someone, but this time will be different.” The group splits up and starts looking for \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_(plural noun). \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_(person) and \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_(person) have a conversation and ignore their environment, as if they aren’t in mortal peril. Then \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_(person) does something stupid and the walkers are now loose among the group. It looks like \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_(person) is going to be walker chow, but then \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_(person) saves the day. However, now they do something even more stupider and \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_(black person) ends up getting bitten/killed by the walkers. ---

There was a real dichotomy in this episode. The first half to 40 minutes was complete shit. Full of magnum level stupid stuff. The last bit - esp. Gabriel’s play - set up some interesting tension. But even that didn’t make much sense from the standpoint of Gabriel’s character. Really stupid shit in no particular order: - electronics bulk packaged loose in peanuts rather than individual packaging - grenade explosion with enough concussive force to propel Aiden into exposed metal (and where did the exposed metal things come from? Did the blast get to them first, twist them around, and then come back to pick Aiden up?) - Woman up in the bucket of the loader - there was no way to climb up there, so how did she do it? Also, why do it? It’s not a strong vantage point and obviously failed in spotting a huge hoard the first time) - Driving out of the compound in a van blasting loud music. Two shows ago, Glenn and Noah were pissed at these two guys for whistling in the woods. - Glenn and Noah seeking shelter in a revolving door. Just fucking stupid. Deserving of death, really. - Scarol mustn’t be very scary. The kid’s tone and affect with her was completely wrong if he was supposed to have believed her for a second. “Aw gee whiz. I know you’re a crazy adult who threatened to kill me, but I’m coming over so you can bake me some cookies!” - motherdick. ---

And considering it shouldn’t have been just in there bulk like that, cutting an X in the side of the box and reaching in shouldn’t have worked. They probably spend a hundred thousand dollars an episode on SFX and couldn’t find the right size box for whatever that thing was so she could cut the tape open and he could say ‘yup, that’s it, grab two boxes’. ---
