Yes! Our family indulged maybe once a year when I was a kid, and it was a sit-down dinner for us.
Now I just laugh when I (by myself in the queue) order the 16-piece bucket with many sides and they ask “for here or to go?”! I’m really big and all, but if I were going to eat a whole bucket I would do it hidden in my lair.

Going from Point A to Point B yesterday; route was thru Da Hood. It was late & we hadn’t eaten lunch so pulled into the KFC on our side of the road. Could barely pull into the lot the drive-thru line was so long so parked & went inside. They had full bulletproof glass & a double door, they put your food in one side & close their door, then you can open your door to remove your food. :eek: I’ve seen that at Chinese takeouts but never a fast food chain location before.
After a few mins of nobody coming to the counter & the people ahead of us complaining that it’s always like this on Sundcay we decided that the candy bar in the car would make a _wonderful_ lunch. Got back in the car, locked the doors & got the 'ell outta there.

The story is mildly amusing, but not enough for me to search out articles about it. Have there been any developments or a resolution in the past week?

I’ve seen it in a KFC in the Bronx, and also at the post office there.

And then there’s the Great 50% Chicken Kerfuffle: in Southern Ontario, CBC Marketplace had chicken from chicken sandwiches from five different fast-food chains tested, and Subway’s were the only ones that didn’t test out as [almost all chicken](http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/subway-defends-its-chicken-after-cbc-marketplace-report-1.4005268).

Other than the case containing freshly baked bread, which is one genuinely nice thing about Subway (can’t make a good sandwich without good bread), I don’t remember seeing either a salad bar or a hot counter at a Subway, unless by “salad bar” you mean the trays of add-ons and condiments to your sandwich.
But IIRC nothing is hot, and if a sandwich is supposed to be served hot, they assemble it and then they nuke it, which effectively steams the bread and tends to create a soggy mess. Even when making a quick-n-dirty hot sandwich at home I refuse to do that. In fact I just had a great smoked meat sandwich earlier today. Toasted a fresh bun to crispy goodness, nuked some beautiful Katz’s deli smoked meat between paper towels in the microwave and laid it on thick, smothered it with Dijon mustard, put the top of the bun on and sliced it in half, and put a full-sour dill pickle on the side. Simple, fast, and far better than Subway.

Years ago (early 70’s), I made my first and only trip to the UK, landing at Heathrow. The first sign I saw on the bus to Birmingham was a big billboard advertising Kentucky Fried Chicken. I guess it’s been popular there for decades.

They were the first American chain to make inroads into the UK, first franchise opened in 1965. McDonalds first branch was 1974, BK in 1976. It took a long time for all of these to be widespread though.
(whisper it, but I wish there more Taco Bells in the UK, but the ubiquitous kebab shop makes that a difficult market to penetrate I suspect)

I’m talking about the equipment required to store/present the sandwich fillings - it’s the same bit of kit as a salad bar - and the place where they keep the warm fillings is a little hot counter - they’re just open on the service side, not the public-facing side. The setup for Subway is fairly simple and cheap compared to other fast food outlets.
