I’ll use an analogy - imagine the Straight Dope as a huge highway, going in many different directions with many off and on ramps, etc. Most posters if left to their own devices would drive with the flow of traffic and cause no trouble. Then you get the occasional poster who would take advantage of the lack of traffic cops (mods) to drive wherever they wanted, cutting across traffic, creating traffic jams and pile-ups. The ability of a few assholes to ruin everything for everyone is not to be underestimated. ---
