These studies really do need to add more weight to things like the weather. I don’t care how idyllic and utopian Sweden and Finland are; it’s fucking cold. Granted, not everyone wants to live somewhere like Florida, but most people don’t want to live in the Arctic, either.
Even by the numbers posted in that list, shouldn’t Switzerland come out ahead of Finland? Finland takes a massive hit on health care when compared with Switzerland, whereas the Swiss are only just behind the Finns in every other category.
If Finland and Switzerland are the top two best places to live, then why is Finland number 14 in suicides, and Switzerland 17?
Not to mention indirect suicide by alcoholism.
While we’re on the subject, isn’t sisu Finnish for balls, or something? In the sense of courage, or “that guy has some balls, saying that to his boss’ face”?
I’d say it’s more like perseverance through adversity, though courage can come in to it. It’s a bit of a loose concept. Can mean lots of stuff. Saying something to the boss’ face in a fit of rage would not be usually considered sisu, but speaking your mind and always opposing him when he’s wrong would be. Rokka in the novel The Unknown Soldier is a famous character with lots of sisu. Here’sRokka mowing down some Russian soldiers from the 1955 film adaptation. Note that the Russians graze him but he remains unfazed.
