This is a cathedral under construction in downtown Oakland,…

Maybe now there’ll be a there there.

I’ve seen the Palace of Culture in Warsaw when I went on holiday there, and my friends and I all commented that we expected the Eye of Sauron to start tracking us at any moment. Even worse is the plaque near it which reads that it was a gift from the loving comrades of the people of Russia to the people of Poland. Yeah, right, built by Poles using their money and probably not because they wanted to.
Actually, it was built by Russians - they brought several thousands of they own workers. But in turn Poles had to built housing and utilities for them… Gotta love them Soviets.
But certainly it wasn’t gift that you can refuse.

Second worst is the Ministry of Roads building in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia. A friend worked there when I was living in Tbilisi.

The way this is tucked into the trees, it looks like a Frank Lloyd Wright, except that it’s really frickin’ ugly, of course.

I honestly don’t think it’s that bad. Imagine it cleaned up and with dark blue glass in the windows. Now, it may be badly-built, or horrendously-planned inside, and it’s probably a bitch to heat (what’s the climate like in Tbilisi, anyways?), but it’s better than The Boot, IMHO.
And the colours of the glass in the night view of the Agbar Tower make it look infected. Not a good image for a water authority.

the Washington Library?
You know, I’m indifferent to a lot of these, and I like even more. I certainly like these a helluva a lot more than the “safe” cardboard boxes that go up everywhere these days. I definitely preferred this for out Transbay Terminal tower than the other two.
Whoa, this has been threadspotted! Eccellente… ![]()
And, to contribute another building to the list of horridities… Here I introduce to you all the “WALDEN 7” complex, brainchild (or perhaps “brainfart”) of Ricardo Bofill.
These buildings stand proud not far away from Barcelona; you can see them from the A7 highway as you drive by.
I imagine that they are the logical counterpart to all those phallic towers we’ve seen before (the Agbar building, the Gherkin…).
Just my 2 eurocent!

I like how it’s on it’s own. Makes it look more impressive and dominating. I think it would look great at night with some spot lights or something shining on it from the base.
No, sorry, not even gigantic rotating colored lights would make this thing look good.
One of JoseB’s earlier links reminds me of The William Jefferson Clinton Library & Museum in Little Rock. Its official web site.
It might be interesting in person; I don’t know: I haven’t been there.
Some of these buildings are so ugly they’re marvelous. Others are just butt-ugly!

This thread would not be complete with out the Experience Music Project in Seattle.
From another angle .

One of my favourites - it’s a real love it or hate it. I even like some of the nicknames for it - the slug that ate the Monorail and Allen’s Hallucinogenic Erection

We’ve had this debate before: can you say about a city “I haven’t REALLY been there” if you just had a transfer in one of its butt ugly airports?

It looks like something out of a 1970’s sci-fi movie. Directed by Allen Smithee and starring Woody Allen.
Wow!
For some reason, it reminds me of a retirement center.
Well you certainly haven’t been to San Francisco if you’ve only been to SFO, since the airport is actually 13 miles south of the city. Distance notwithstanding, you also haven’t ridden a cable car, watched the fog roll in through the Golden Gate, eaten a burrito on Mission Street, walked around Chinatown, watched people play chess outside the Powell Street BART station, or, to get back on topic, seen Coit Tower or the De Young Museum up close. Things do not always look or “feel” the same in photos. For instance, it’s hard to tell in the linked photo that the De Young has a copper facade. It was recently rebuilt, and the copper hasn’t had time to turn green yet. Also, you can’t see the color too well because of the light angle relative to the camera. Compare with this photo, or this close up showing the texture.

I work near THIS hideous piece of crap. Passers by have been known to mistake it for a prison. It is, in fact, a courthouse and federal office building.

The goggles! They do nothing!
How about this thing at Cal Poly Pomona University?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, the architect was attempting to evoke his native New Mexico, so I heard. But the staff at the uni calls it the Darth Vader Building and everyone hates it.
