It’s _like_ yesterday.

Not to hijack too badly, but the boundary of importance I’ve noticed is if something happened before or after I became an adult. I have friends who are just four or five years younger than I, but when they talk about how cool X was when they were fifteen and I was twenty at the time, I feel really old. So when someone was six or seven when a movie came out that I remember as a modern, recent movie hitting the cinemas when I was an adult, I feel _really_ old.
When The Monster Squad was finally released on dvd a few weeks ago, I was supremely excited. At the office I was talking up the movie quite a bit but no one remembered it. So I went found the movie trailer online and had everyone watch it. Seeing hte preview everyone remembered it… except for one girl…
“Wait, how old are you?”
“22”
“…You were 2 years old when it came out… I just grew the longest beard.”

Back on the topic “The Monster Squad” is still an awesome fun movie.. a lot of it doesn’t make sense but it’s still great.

But the most embarassing movie I liked was [The Pirate Movie](http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0084504/). I thought Kristy McNichol was really cool and had a crush on Christopher Atkins. A local indie movie theatre played the trailer before “Pirates of the Caribbean” and even the trailer was painfully bad.

“Give me a happy ending…every time. Don’t be unhappy, everything will work out fiiiine…”

“Keep pumping (blowing) Keep pumping (blowing)…Well it’s a long, hard story - well it’s a long, wild tale. Said love is glory…”

“Have you ever known what it is to be…an orphan?”

“Ole.”

Honest to pete, you guys, I adore _Billy Jack_. Yes, it’s a product of it’s time, and very heavy-handed, but it’s a unique and fascinating example of the independent cinema of the time, and captures a certain moment in our culture.

But, I watched them.

I like The 13th Warrior, too. It’s got Vikings! Everybody loves Vikings! Except maybe the monks at Lindisfarne.

I used to love all the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. I thought the plots were clever, the scares were scary, and Freddy was cool. I catch them sometimes now on cable (if there’s absolutely nothing else on) and I think, man, what was wrong with me?

which I saw when I was eight years old, and iit has a pair of breasts and lots of a short buy beating up tall guys in it, so I think I can be forgiven. Like I said, I was only 8 years old.

I like **Conan the Barbarian, Highlander, The 13th Warrior, The Lost Boys, Predator** , and like \*\* matt\*\* I’ll make time for anything along the lines of “Sinbad and the work of Ray Harryhausen”.

But I _love_ **Conan the Barbarian**. It was full of shitty actors (Arnold), first-time actors (all the bodybuilders, and Gerry Lopez was professional surfing champion), actors with great voices (James Earl Jones, Max Von Sydow), had a great score and was pure Neitzsche philosophy with a cannibalistic snake cult and cheesey special effects. I still watch it every couple months.

You do have to respect _Conan the Barbarian_ for having the line of dialogue:

“At first we thought it was just another snake cult…”

Laughs aplenty, courtesy screenwriter Oliver Stone.

The **Lethal Weapon** series. Great when I was a kid, but now it’s just corny beyond belief, and after Mel’s arrest, the loose cannon jokes come too easily:

I still think the first one is a fine movie. They went down hill rapidly, IMO.

I liked “Red Dawn.”

I liked the Halle Barry “Catwoman” too. (Halle Barry, leather cat suit, a big whip, hey, what’s not to like?)

And I still like watching Susan Sarandon in “Rocky Horror Picture Show”. (Damnit, Janet!!)

**Triskadecamus** ’ reminded me: almost any of the comic book super hero movies that are reviled. I like almost all of them. I think the only one that I didn’t like was \*The Hulk. \*

Some are much much better than others of course, but my requirements for these things aren’t too high.

What killed me about those movies after I grew up is that many people I knew as kids (even some adults) never realized the movies were _satire._

I love _Good Burger_! I saw it on my 16th birthday.

And I still watch _Tommy Boy_ probably once a year…my whole family, even my mom, busts a gut watching that movie. There’s just something about it, something about the particular brand of dumb humor, that makes people related to me go CRAZY. And no other Chris Farley or David Spade movie has that effect, just that one. I don’t get it.

_Congo_ was a scary favorite of mine for a while. Gave me nightmares.

Loved _Red Dawn_, too. And _Armageddon_.

But we actually named one of our sons after a character in _Independence Day_. (Because we heard the name and liked it, not because we’re fanatics or anything weird.) Now that kid wants to watch “his” movie every other night.

But you know realize that they are, in fact, bad movies. Right?

**Joe Vs. Volcano** , I love the movie excpet for the third act. The stuff on the island is silly and face it, blonde Meg Ryan is not nearly as interesting as Red Meg and brown mousey Meg was my kind of sweet. I do like the very end. So overall I think it is a good movie. It does have the greatest scene in cinema, better than the baby carriage in Battleship Potemkin, better than the shower scene in Psycho, better than the opening speech in Patton or the Godfather. I am speaking of course about the suitcase salesman scene.
I remember thinking that 20,000 leagues under the sea was great but rewatching as an adult, I realize that was just the Milk-duds thinking.
