The problem isn’t whether the character in the shoot um up is male or female. The problem is that it is a shoot um up. Yes there are women who like shoot um ups but most women are not that into it.
Designing games that appeal to female sensibilities are what are going to attract more female gamers. Things like social and co-operative games are going to score higher.
