I don’t think this the New Madrid fault. It’s centered near Memphis where Arkansas, Missouri, and Tenn share a border.
That’s the big one that has many people worried. It could take out Memphis. A major quake will be felt all the way down to Little Rock where I live.

I was awake at the time. Felt a “push” and one thing rattled. Hmm, maybe a quake. Check the time. 4:14.
Definitely not as noisy as a couple others I’ve noticed here.
Per the USGS “Did you feel it?” site I’m the 33rd person to report it in my area. Surprising number of people awake _and_ reporting it.

We’ve had a whole bunch of 2 to 4 magnitude earthquakes here in the Dallas area, which seem to be caused by fracking wastewater injection.
The bigger, closer ones are noticeable- not really scary, but surprising. Kind of a “What was that vibration from the floor? Was that an earthquake?” sort of thing.

I experienced a similar thing - picture it, Sicily, 1983. Etna was erupting and I was awakened, thinking someone was kicking my bed. Except I had a room to myself. I assumed it was a dream.
Next morning, I discovered several items that had been on a shelf were now on the floor, and I figured it out. My first earthquake…

About 10 years ago, my wife and I went to the Smokies area for her to attend a seminar/retreat. We had just finished unpacking the van when, BA-BOOM! Wow! a tree must have fallen over nearby. NOPE! Earthquake. In the Smokies. :eek:
As for the OP, if you keep your feet under the covers, nothing can reach up and grab your ankle. From under the bed. Late at night. In the dark.

Pff. In California, a 4.4 is not even worth opening your eyes for.
Onn time my wife and I were asleep, and were woken by a sudden shaking. She said “what’s that?” I mumbled “probably an earthquake” and went back to sleep. The next morning we discovered a very large tree had fallen on our house.

Found a [thread](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=180589) on one of the earlier quakes I felt from 2003. That one was definitely stronger than this one.
While Californians might tut-tut about such a small quake, keep in mind that in the East the energy travels farther (fewer faults and such to moderate them). So more noticeable from fairly far away.

A co-worker told me he had woken up for an early shift, and had just finished his morning prayers when the quake hit. Freaked him the hell out. I told him it was probably his fault.

Yah, we were out of town when that tornado, the one that blew windows off the Westin Peachtree Plaza, hit downtown Atlanta years ago. And my mom and dad were wakened by the Dunwoody tornado. Dad got up and wandered downstairs in his boxers shorts, opened the garage door to watch the strobe lightning, then went back to bed. Woke to no power, downed trees all over the street, a fatality two blocks over where a tree fell on a house. While he and Mom snored, all their neighbors had sensibly sheltered in their basements.
