Following the success of Psycho that alone would prime the audience to be waiting for a horrific scene at every moment. But The Birds is actually a much tamer movie.

I’ll always give The Birds a higher fright score than Psycho, because I saw the former when I was a little kid and it scared the holy bejeezus out of me - in particular, the scene with the dead guy whose eyes had been pecked out.

I saw Psycho for the first time as an adult, and it didn’t frighten me nearly as much.

I can understand that. My own opinion is colored by reversing that order, Psycho when I was somewhat young, The Birds later. The first time I saw both was on broadcast TV and some scenes were clearly censored. Not like I could see much on a fuzzy B&W 12" screen anyway.
