What about Bosom Buddies? Not necessarily the cross-dressing but is there any possibility that apartments could be women only anymore. Probably couldn’t have women only jobs or anything anymore unless the boys want to work at Hooters and that would come with its own issues to produce. Seems to me it would be near impossible to even set up the premise.
Kip and Henry were only in drag for the apartment. On the job they dressed in regular men’s clothing. Even that got toned down a lot in the second season.
Yes I know. But they were in drag because it was a woman’s only apartments. Today are those even legal? If not and you want to change the setting then the question is are there are any “woman only” anythings anymore other than specialty work like Hooters or lingerie shops?
The obvious answer would be to set it in the past. Then you also get to have fun with those wacky 70s/80s tropes.
Actually, now that I think about it, two guys in drag to work at Hooters would either be a huge success or last 3 episodes or less. No middle ground.
“I can’t believe that Owl Be Your Girl has ten seasons now!”
This was part of the setup when Roseanne was revived; Darlene was a liberal Democrat and her parents were Trump supporters. Then Roseanne Barr got herself fired from her own show and when it was retooled none of the Connors were Trumpers.
My idea was to flip it. Make the old dad like Michael Gross in Family Ties. A ten episode season.
By the last episode he’s voting Republican for the first time in his life. Not that his kids are Trump supporters. One is further left then he could possibly imagine*, and the other is just an ‘all sides are bad/America is the worst’ nihilist.
- Ex: He goes to march with his kid and is sent home for being an old white guy.
It wasn’t ordinary apartments- it was a residential hotel , like the Barbizon in NYC. Which was already accepting men by 1981 when it was converted to an ordinary hotel. I’m not 100% sure that they aren’t legal ( there has to be some exception that allows fraternity/sorority housing, and if it’s based on sharing common space residential hotels would qualify) - but I am sure they no longer exist because they were supposed to be a safe place for a girl to live when she moved to the big city and therefore had rules like no men except in the lobby. I’m surprised they lasted into the '80s.
If Michael J. Fox were healthy, what about Alex Keaton as a Trumpanista and his kids ultra-progressive like AOC supporter and Bernie Bro?
I just feel like the idea of casting the lead as a Trump supporter is a non-starter. But a Jack Donaghy type Republican has legs.
I have to believe that if 30 Rock had a few more seasons there would have been some scene like this.
(Liz Walks into Jacks office, Jack has one hand over his face as if he has a massive migraine)
Liz: “What’s wrong Jack, your boy won.”
Jack: (wags non-face palm finger) “That…is not ‘my boy’. Populism is anti-ethical to Republicanism. How will people know what to think if we don’t tell them?”
Liz: “So…you just gonna sit here with one hand over your face for the next four years?”
Jack: “…yes…”
Jaunty Jeff Richmond tune plays.
They said the same about Nazis, but as Hogan’s Heroes showed, it’s OK if you laugh at them. Suppose Alex Keaton didn’t get vaxxed and got covid but plays it off as just a cold? #1 show of the season.
Ok, THAT’S funny!
“Dad if it’s ‘just a cold’…why have you police-taped off the entire second floor?”
“I just don’t want you to get a cold.”
Dad, you know that loss of taste is a symptom of covid.
It’s just that you’re mom is such a bad cook, everything she makes is tasteless.
Dad … that’s chili.
(Cue laugh track)
I’ve observed that there’s been very little acknowledgement of COVID in movies and shows that were created during the past two years, and I felt that it might have been a deliberate choice that was made to enhance the feeling of escapism. Often I found myself wondering, “hmmm…I wonder if they’re going to have ANY reference to COVID on this.” In particular, I remember watching the first season of The White Lotus and thinking “everyone’s going to wind up getting COVID…they just HAVE to use that as a plot device…it’s exactly the kind of sobering development that would occur on such a cynically intelligent show.” But no, it didn’t happen.
However, 5 or 10 years from now I think there’s going to be a wave of movies and shows set during “the Pandemic Years”, exploiting it for comedy, particularly cringe-inducing awkwardness related to anti-vaxers.
I watch very little modern TV but the few Covid refs I’ve seen ranged way over the top (Greys Anatomy) to cringe (Brooklyn 99)
IMO

But, the Nazis were not commanding a significant portion of the voting (and viewing) populace at the time. Trump has a following, and while it has dwindled a little he is still a player. And, many right wing candidates mimic him and seek the approval of his base. Also, I think that covid idea might not work, the entire pandemic is still fresh. It wouldnt really be funny to someone who was in that large base of people. Probably infuriating, ie there go the coastal elites, mocking us again. Unless you were kidding, and so nevermind and I am dense.
Vox Dei, and I was delighted to hear that the scumbucket got ripped off by a scam artist.
NCIS: New Orleans had it as part of every episode for a year or so after production resumed. They took masks off for dialogue, but otherwise they were shown as masked. They had several episodes on the effect of the pandemic on people and the economy of New Orleans, too. It was very unusual to see that compared to other shows where the pandemic never happened.
I have certainly met white people who don’t believe in racial equality, but have no issue fraternizing ( and sleeping with) members of other races. I have also met black people who behave the same way. The posts replying to my first post were clarifying to me in some ways; it was a show of it’s time, and that time was before mine. I probably won’t understand it like people did when it aired. It may be a generational issue
