Things made better in my life because of these boards

I asked for automobile recommendations and was steered toward the 2001 Honda Civic, which I subsequently bought and believe may be the best car ever. It’s really quick, looks quite sporty, and gets 35 MPG in the city, 41+ on the highway. Thanks SDMB!

see, now this is nice…
a very positive thread…

this is why the straight dope needs a forum opposite to the pit
call it “the cradle”

or to be known by its more formal name-

lullaby of the cradle

I stumbled onto the SDMB and signed up, but then forgot all about it. 2 years later, I re-discovered it. It has been my source for intelligent discussion and humor about the day’s events and topics that interest me ever since.

Without it, I would not be as intellectually stimulated as often. It showed me that a strong opinion is not enough-one must have facts, logic, knowledge and judgement, in short, wisdom, as well.
And I love the sex threads–sex is not a topic of conversation in my social circles.

Social circles is where I get down and dirty on this - it’s at home that I’m not allowed to bring it up any more.

I met the coolest GM ever on the boards.

Also, when I was a freshman in college, I had a pregnancy scare the first time I ever did anything fun. I vented about it here, and everyone was really supportive. Come to think of it, I was quite the whiny, needy, self-obsessed brat at that time. . .but y’all took me in anyway.

I’ve changed religions. ( ok, I just gave up on it all because of the inconsistancies and whatnot.) A profuse thank you to all you smartypants cynics out there.

I’ve watched movies that I probably would have never found on my own and have gushed like a 12 year old girl about my favorite movies or written ehhhh reviews to movies that people in the real world Adored and I went, " WTF was that all about?" and found other dopers shared my opinion.

I’ve been exposed to different genres of excellent books that I would have never ever found on my own. and am perpetually broke because of all the Whatcha Reading threads that suggest 15 more good books that I’ve never heard of. You bastids.
I’ve blurbed out “Hi Opal!” and “Cite” in public to receive blank looks.

I strongly suspect that everyone but dopers are The Walking Dead.
I’ve just taken and taken and not given back a thing to this place.
YAY me!
The perfect relationship!

Besides that the Dope gives me a broader view of the world in general, someone here (more than one, I think) mentioned fitday.com. Thank you, whoever you (all) are, I’ve lost 15 pounds and have better control over my eating habits.

Now, for that last 10#.

The Dope has definitely brought a lot of wisdom and laughter into my life. It came along at just the right time in my life, my mid 30s. It has helped me to be more mature, to look at things from all sides, to be more able to admit when I’m wrong, and the ability to stand up and fight when I’m right. Which is a lot more often because of the Dope.

It taught me that I don’t have to accept anything someone says as gospel. I have the right to ask for a cite!
I’ve been sitting here thinking of the ways the dope has helped me to grow into the woman I am right now, and HOly crap. It’s been huge. How else could I get so much socialization, as a single mother that works full-time, goes to bed by 10, and is much more of a homebody than a “people person”? I’d be a hermit with rapidly devolving verbal skills and early-onset senility without it.

Some of the posts in this thread have really been touching.

Group hug.

And one of the early signs of early-onset senility is the penchant for writing long, rambling sentences that, in the end, don’t make sense. I must need more Dope.
