I actually got to stop the presses once. But I didn’t get to say “Stop the presses.” Damn it.

To that extent, _The Paper_ is a pretty accurate portrayal of the industry. It even has them saying “C’mon, if you’re gonna do it you have to say it.”

> In War of the Worlds, the aliens are taken out by a virus. Independence Day is a rehash of War of the Worlds. The aliens in Independence Day should be taken out with a virus.

Which, though I’m not much of a fan of the movie, I can fanwank thus:

To judge from what happens to Not Data in ID, the aliens are either psychic or at the very least capable of rudimentary mind control of humans, which indicates that among minds less alien to their own (in other words, theirs) they probably have better abilities to read and/or control.

So: imagine a world full of creatures who could read each others’ minds. Theft and sabotage – indeed, most crimes – would be nigh nonexistent. There would be no question of getting caught if everyone around you could read your mind. The incorrigibly criminal would be weeded out, and those who remained would, after millions of years of evolution, be congenitally honest among their own people.

And just as people who live in a small town where everyone knows each other might not lock their doors, a culture of creatures incapable of deception would not bother with firewalls. It simply would not occur to them to invent, just as (most) humans don’t wear tin hats to prevent aliens reading their thoughts.

As for my job? I can’t think of many movies that feature billing people or customer service, but Grandma’s Boy does have a couple of problems – there’s the bugs (ha!) folder, there’s the fact that the QAs have entire full-sized cubes all to themselves (not unheard of, but I remember thinking to myself that this must be a very rich, very small studio), and the main character taking the dev kit home is ridiculous. Also, are we supposed to believe that this guy is an engine programmer, a UI programmer, a level designer, a writer, a 2D artist, a 3D artist, a foley artist, a voice actor, a sound editor, an animator…? Sure, I’ve known people who could wear multiple hats – it’s a requirement, I hear, to work for Valve – but from the project I worked on in my spare time with another dozen people, even without programming our own engine it took years to put the game together. If he’s doing the equivalent of dabbling with the Unreal Engine in his off hours, which is a bit more feasible, then maybe he’s knocked off a game’s worth of levels in a few years.

It’s not far off otherwise, though, apart from what’s already been brought up.

What about the time saving your girlfriend from having her heart ripped out by a Thugee priest? 😃
Re: Hot for teacher…yes there are a lot of student and teacher crushes, but anyone who actually HAD a student teacher hot for teacher realtionship, would prolly be not exactly all there. Yes, it does happen, but it does seem like the majority of them have really significent issues…at my jr high, there was a gym teacher (who was BEYOND creepy) who carried on a realtionship with a girl with a brain tumor and another girl who for some reason had no clue WHY it wasn’t a good thing to have a realtionship with a guy old enough to be your father. (and he was CREEPY…Like very creepy looking)

Better tell that to Norton, AVG, McAfee, etc.
