Pretty much every housing development is named for what it destroyed when built: Deer Run, Mountain View, Birch Grove, High Meadow, etc…
Times Beach, Missouri:
Opryland.
I remember coming to Nashville as a kid and going there. I remember taking my niece and nephew there after I moved here. Now, there’s a shopping mall there.
When I was a kid we used to go at least annually. The Wiki doesn’t say so but apparently the redevelopment of the site is complete and it’s now a swanky resort /condo complex.
There are lots of similar 2nd- & 3rd-rank amusement park and theme attractions that were built in SoCal in the 50s thru 70s which died in the 90s and 2000s. Some are still visible; most are obliterated.
My all-time favorite landmark on the long ride from Arkansas to Chicago. I drove by when the hazmat guys were there. Snuck in a few times too.
Meh. Now had you said Knoebels I would be in the car checking the stash of tickets I keep hidden under the seat!
I have a friend who grew up in Centralia PA; is it extra points if the whole damn town is gone?
My grade school is gone, as are my junior high school, my high school, the public library and the house I grew up in. The town hall is slated for demolition.
Lakeview Pizza in Kings Beach, California
But your permanent record will haunt you forever!
Knoebels actually popped into my head before Kennywood, but (I’m not a native PA-er) it’s a 73 hour drive from your neck of the woods through the heart of Zombie territory, isn’t it?
Yes, definitely.
my cat
Four hours and eleven minutes give or take 10 minutes for a piss stop. Three forty five and change on the Harley. Can you tell I do it a few times a year or so? What other park would a dedicated Coaster Zombie ride past three other parks for?
Didn’t realize there were other coaster fanatic Dopers around these parts! XD
Can’t beat Knoebel’s. I haven’t been lately, but it’s still #1 for me.
Which I helped open this summer.
Willow Grove Park outside of Philly is also now a mall (but I didn’t open that one)
Whatever became of Wheaty Wheat?
The Bamiyan Buddhas, unfortunately.
Manny’s Bar and Grill, Cave Rock, Nevada.
An under appreciated asset of low class in a high rent spot. A fucking bare spot now.
What’s next? Bulldoze Sam’s Place?
Seconded. But I’ve saved a crapload on shampoo & conditioner.
McCormick & Company (spices) used to be in downtown Baltimore from 1889 to 1989, right on the waterfront; the whole Inner Harbor used to be aromatic (still is, but not in a good way). The plant’s gone, moved to Sparks, MD, modern facilities, blah, blah, blah.
