Yeh I’m with you on this. I don’t think it’s weird at all that the previous owners took it. Surely everyone just brings some from their previous abode?

Now THAT is another matter. That is absolutely ridiculous.

Some people would be enraged that such a thing- contaminated surely! 🙀 ) was left behind. The proper thing is to leave a fresh new unopened roll.

Yep, especially a partial roll.

Thats too much.

That’s something like my father said but with an adjective and comment about the previous owner’s ancestry thrown in.

I’ve lived in too many rental places and the only ones I’ve purchased were new when I bought them, but I’ve never had toilet paper left in the place. Is that expected in America?

In Japan, the occupants supply their own light fixtures so that’s expected but I’d be pissed about someone taking fuses.

We traveled 100 miles for the closing of our new house. I don’t general keep TP in my car, It’s not like we could just dash home.

We didn’t spend the night, but we sure wanted to see it and spend a bit of time at the new place.

We left a bed at our old house, new owners wanted it. We provided a brand new never used fitted pad for the bed for the new owners because we are decent people. We also left freaking TP.

Yes. Leaving at least some TP, if not a roll in every bathroom, is the decent thing to do, because when the movers load in all your stuff, TP is probably not going to be in the first box you open.

Using a previous owner’s TP is not weird or icky in the least, unless _you_ are really weird.

Also, taking it when you leave is a petty thing to do.

Yep, if you’ve ever used a public bathroom or work bathroom, why not use leftover TP from previous owners? And if you haven’t, then yeah, you’re the weird one.

I think the thought is that they might have done something to it. But that is the CW from a couple sites I looked at- no half-used rolls, but one or more new rolls, not unrolled.

As we do now and did then but the ceiling lights are a fixed part of the structure. Back then they held two light bulbs with an easy to remove translucent glass plate under them. Today’s are a little fancier and are known as “boob lamps” for reasons that escape me.

Japanese homes and apartments will have simple light fixtures for bathrooms and halls and such, but bedrooms and living rooms will just have one of these kinds of sockets. They are all standard sizes so you can easily install your own lights.

Recently, LED lights with translucent covers seems to be really common.

That looks great! I wish we had a standardized system like this in Germany.

Ditto. That would be great.

Here is the closest US fixtures have with the cover off. The three screws hold the cover in place and the diameter is a fixed size, 4-inches I think. On the boob lamp pictured above the nipple screws onto a threaded shaft to hold the cover in place.

What does the square button on the left side of the rectangular bit do? I’m guessing it’s a release?

Yes, it’s a release. It locks in place and the release button lets you remove it.

With LEDs and the plastic translucent covers, light fixtures and remarkably light.

With really heavy glass fixtures, you still need to screw into a ceiling joist to hold the fixture. Otherwise, the socket will hold the weight of the light.

As they are standard sockets, it’s really easy to choose your own lights.

I must have moved about ten times in my life and I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever walked into a house or flat that had toilet roll in it. And I’ve never left any behind. So I guess I and all those people I’ve bought or rented off are just inconsiderate so and so’s 🤣

I would consider it kind of weird if a house seller left toilet paper in a house I bought, just as I would consider it weird if they left any other consumable products like facial tissue, paper towels, sponges, hand soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, etc. I want to move into a completely empty house. Take your crap with you when you leave.

I’m on the fence about light bulbs. I’d probably want to eventually replace them with bulbs of my desired brightness and color temperature, but that wouldn’t be my first priority after moving in. So I’d prefer that you leave light bulbs, but I don’t mind if you don’t.

We’ve lived in this house for 40 years, but we are considering downsizing.

When we move, I don’t think I’ll even consider removing the TP from the holders in the bathrooms. But the TP that’s still in the packaging? It’s going with us.

This has bugged me for a long time…

Stop making me bring MY technology to purchase YOUR produce/service. Give me a printed menu, put your prices on your products, put up parking meters that accept my quarters, or even my credit card.

I have been bemoaning the fact that you now have to have a smart phone to get along in the world. I feel bad for the tourists who come down here and have to install an app on their phone to pay for the on-street parking downtown. And their only going to need the app for a few days, if that. I think of all the money the city spent removing the coin-op parking meters just to make it harder for people.
