What I’ve heard (here, I think) is that some people are afraid someone will come up behind them and push their car into the intersection, whether accidentally or on purpose wasn’t clear. It sounds like an irrational fear, and I’m not finding any support with some quick Googling, but I’m pretty sure I’m not just making it up. My so-called brain isn’t what it was, but I don’t think I’m that far gone.

Does anyone else remember people making this claim?

I have heard that, and I have not heard of it occurring, except as a reult of a pretty serious accident. Seems irrational.

BTW, here’s [another thing that documentary filmmakers do](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/things-that-infuriate-you-well-beyond-their-actual-importance/1006712/957) that annoys me: stretching out historic 4:3-ratio footage to fill their 16:9 ratio frame. They make people look fat and everything else look too wide.

Just put black bars at the sides (pillar boxing)! Sheesh!

I’ve heard that; seems like an overreaction to me. I wasn’t taught this in Driver’s Ed, nor is it something I ever saw my parents do. Maybe a few people use that “reasoning” but it’s more likely people just aren’t paying attention because they’re looking at their phone.

All other reasons for people driving poorly are dwarfed in comparison to phone use.

Grrr ! I have to admit there’s sense in what you say. And it’s probably true that a few more people will get flu shots if it is spelled out to them that they won’t have to dig in their wallets for it.

It doesn’t lessen the annoyance I feel when they trumpet the word “free” for something that really isn’t.

I would be even more annoyed if I were one of the many who lack good insurance and come to find the “Free Flu Shot !” wasn’t.

It’s like those “Free windshield rock chip repair!” signs.

Last time i wanted a cup in my windshield repaired, the repair company really really tried to convince me to get the whole windshield replaced. “It’s free”. Yes, my insurance will pay for that. But i know this windshield fits perfectly and doesn’t leak at the edges, and the wiper fits it well. And it was an extremely small chip that i couldn’t even see from the driver’s side, it was really only visible to the passenger.

And if it was OEM it will likely be a better fit windshield.

Mind you, if a windshield has microchips etc and one bigger one, and they make that offer- think about it.

I don’t think a replaced OEM windshield will fit better than the original one. Is that what you are saying?

It is true that a new windshield can be nicer than an old, scuffed-up windshield.

A few years ago we bought an Instant Pot that came with an air-fryer lid. For each of both, we bought a recipe book and a cheat sheet to stick on the refrigerator.

We have about given up on using the air fryer. The reason? Almost every recipe in the air-fryer book calls for “the multi-level air fryer rack”. This is important because the food needs to have air circulating around it. If you’re cooking fries, for example, they won’t come out good if they’re clumped together in a pile at the bottom of the inner air-fryer pot.

But Instant Pot doesn’t ship “the multi-level air-fryer rack” with their products. They don’t sell “the multi-level air-fryer rack” separately. And if we have to get it from some other company, how do we know for sure we’re buying correct multi-level air-fryer rack for our Instant Pot?

Are you sure there is a multilevel air fryer rack for your instant pot? Because my first dedicated air fryer did not have a multilevel rack . It just had a basket , like [this one.](https://www.target.com/p/proctor-silex-air-fryer-black/-/A-79318253#lnk=sametab).

I’m annoyed by a slow leak in a few tires…slow enough that it can explained by temperature differentials. I give a few pounds every month or so to a few tires.

I wonder if some OEM rims would fit new tires as well as the current rims.

Probably not.

Oh…wait…

(Eh…room for argument…proper maintenance of one’s automobile is extremely important. However, when operating within spec at every moment…to me, it can be a bit niggling to insist on perfect adherence to standards at all moments, so long as when operating it conforms to correct standards, as measured by accurate tools.)

You are not likely to get a OEM windshield as the replacement. They cost several times aftermarket and usually take a couple weeks to order. (I was a consultant with a major company that did windshield replacement & repairs). The aftermarket are just about as good, but why replace a OEM with a non-oem?

But yeah, if your windshield has been thru the wars, a new aftermarket is a good deal- for free anyway.

There is a good reason for staying back if in the left lane at a 4 way intersection.

If you see on your right, a semi is going to turn in front of you, It helps them a LOT if you are a bit further back.

And I’ve never been told to stay back, but both i and my husband have been hit from behind hard enough to push us into the car in front of us. I was on ice, and watched the car approach from behind, knowing they hadn’t left enough room to break. My husband was number two in a line of 3 stopped cars when a fourth barreled into the third hard enough that our car damaged the bumper of car #1.

If I’m second, third, or more behind the first car in a line of stopped cars, I always leave a little room between me and the car ahead of me. It’s because this trick was drilled into us by our driving instructor in high school (remember when they still taught that?). He said it was in case the car behind you did a jackrabbit start or otherwise drove forward unexpectedly, smacking into you. The buffer space that you left in front was to at least prevent you from running into the car ahead.

Mr. brown was not taught this in his driver’s ed, so it annoys him that I do so. And I _was_ smacked into once while waiting in a line of stopped cars, and I avoided bumping the car in front. So thanks, driver’s ed teacher from 1973. It worked!

Would the foru feet that he was talking about stop you from being pushed into the intersection?

See, sure, you can be hit so hard you are pushed into an intersection, but four feet isnt gonna be enuf to save you.

Yes, probably.

I pull up to intersections because during the day people might need the space behind me, and at night i want to make sure to trigger the sensor. But I’m not sure it’s actually wise to do so.

In fact, when I was hit i had left a lot of space, because of the ice. And i did jostle the car in front of me, but only barely. I think the space helped.

Wait, there was a car in front of you? I thought we were talking about leaving that 4 feet in front of you when you are the first car in the intersection? To me the car in front of you will prevent you from being pushed into the intersection, woudlnt it?
