At the office we have some crummy TP that is single ply and when someone rips off what they need the end disappears into the dispenser and sticks to the main roll. The next person (always me) cannot find the end. I roll it this way and that, drag my fingernails along the roll hoping they will catch the end. I HATE it. When I finally am able to pull it down, I always make sure that I rip it off so there is a tail hanging out of the dispenser.

Yeah, but that’s how it works with every other business too. If a truck careens off the highway and crushes three customers at McDonald’s, nobody expects it to be reported under the franchisee’s name.

I did think it was a little funny, when people were boycotting United for about ten minutes after the police incident in Chicago, that probably 0% of them were checking to see if their replacement flights were operated by Republic (the entity that was, to the extent it was the airline’s fault at all, at fault for what happened to the guy). But that’s what you get when you paint your logo on someone else’s property.

During podcasts I often hear an ad for Noom, a weight loss service. The Real Customer featured is someone who doesn’t like salad, to show that the techniques work even without going salad heavy.

Fine, but he says that for most people salads are a weight loss “easy button”. Sorry, Mr. Can’t Eat Salad, there is no weight loss easy button. I’m sure you felt unique in your weight loss struggle because you live a salad free life, but struggle is the norm for weight loss.

Pisses me off every time I hear it.

Salads are also often drenched in high-calorie dressings.

Which is the best part. 😇 But seriously- many overweight people dont get enough fiber, and a big salad- even one with nearly as many calories are that double bacon burger- can really help.

I mean, it might be true; and some overweight people eat poorly in general; but a lot of overweight people don’t. (And a lot of underweight people do also eat poorly in general.)

I’d give you that in a second, it’s the “Easy Button” crack that is infuriating. If he said that salads were a great weight loss tool, I wouldn’t be irritated at all.

I think that eating enough fiber that you cease to overeat is wishful thinking in the real world. I’m imagining eating four cups of dry wheat bran before each meal … I bet that might do it.

I agree. Eating so much fiber your belly is bulging is unpleasant, but i don’t find it actually slakes my hunger. Adding fiber to a meal might slow down the process of eating enough to start to feel satiated during the meal, but it might not.

I got a notice from UPS that they were going to deliver something while I was away for two weeks. I hadn’t ordered anything to arrive while I was gone, and I had no idea who was sending it or what it was, so I had to arrange with a neighbor to pick it up for me.

When I got home, I found it was an Aetna Medicare Care Package. You can see the contents here on [this eBay page](https://www.ebay.com/itm/387989655627?_skw=Aetna+Medicare+Care+Package+2025&itmmeta=01JNE45TBY53WTY7GN6JZRR038&hash=item5a55fc504b:g:XoMAAOSwP~5nu63V&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAAA4FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1d1SKy9zxwkQBTb2AcDHDhdoMq4jLoNLWsoWe0QuFvTjF9tY9noaJ9%2FcYhb9nloNgm1SoEbAE3%2Fj0WLIb3OFF--7snxsXtv6AFOlOBnoDsjCY01h08Kll%2BleYAFFai6qt6fQOnlu6M7ML6J2TMYBA4sNFSouQAF7cnLQ8shgUOimuIdfFNRAlHKuAzDwAAYB2n70cUxXvLAT%2FxFgCwvSEVZ%2FNhTYjN0Cmha8CfdFMgkiVOAZ0lUCzKkCTz%2Bu176dtCnm5EeB2Dvdw1CO%2B7HLd8V%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR4iml8SrZQ) where someone is trying to sell it for $20. (Good luck, I say.)

It contains:

- Soft blanket
- Crossword puzzle book with pencil
- Black Socks - 98% polyester, 2% spandex - one size fits all
- Halo Branded Solution cup/mug with chamomile herbal tea
- Hand lotion

I didn’t ask for this.

They didn’t ask me if I wanted it

They didn’t tell me they were going to send it.

I don’t need any of this crap.

I don’t want any of this crap.

So the geniuses at Aetna Medicare decided to put me and my neighbor to some trouble to dump this unwanted, unasked-for box of crap in my lap.

I don’t want to throw it away: it’s their crap, not mine. If I dropped a bag of my garbage on your doorstep, would you just calmly put it into your trash can? No, you’d tell me to take my trash away.

So I called them and told them all this, and asked them to send me a label to return the package.

The first agent said they couldn’t do that.

I asked for a supervisor. I repeated my complaint to her, and filed a grievance with the company. I pointed out that if they’re sending thousands of these out without asking people if they want them, a large percentage are probably going partly or entirely into the trash. This is wasteful of Aetna’s money and environmentally irresponsible. I hope that the message will filter up the line and they’ll stop or modify the practice

I’ll be taking mine to Goodwill later today.

Grrrrr! 😡

I have a similar problem with Grove Collaborative. When you order more than $X from their website they’ll throw in a “free gift” with your order. Of course the gift is really an attempt to promote their other products and they’re hoping you’ll buy more. I always order more than the threshold because 1) It’s also the threshold for free shipping. 2) I figure it’s more environmentally responsible to place one large bulk order than a bunch of small orders.

Sometimes, the free gift is something I can actually use, like a bar of soap or some laundry detergent sheets. But other times it’s something I don’t need and will probably never use. Like last time I ordered from them they sent me some organic cotton swabs. I never use cotton swabs. For a company that claims to be environmentally responsible, it’s not very environmentally responsible of them to send me crap I don’t need.

And some of the people they sent laundry sheets to won’t use those; and so on. They ought to instead give a choice of gifts; including the choice of not picking any of them.

</div>

It seemed like in the past they actually did exactly that, but the last time I placed an order with them I didn’t get a choice anymore, unless I just missed that in the ordering process (Or, come to think of it, I wonder if my ad blocker blocked the pop-up asking me to choose my gift). I feel like they probably don’t want people to get the same gift more than once because they presumably want people to try a bunch of different products, and they don’t want gaming the system to just get a free supply of laundry detergent or whatever. So I may have just already received all the other gifts and now they’re just defaulting to the ones I haven’t gotten yet. But would be nice in that case if I had the option to just say I don’t want the free item.

This is why that ad with that company that makes branded product trying to make their name a synonym for “sure” makes me laugh- most branded products are crap. I mean, I guess if you are starting out in life a coffee mug or a commuted mug could be handy, but we have a cabinet full of that stull. I was consulting for Schwab and their 'schwag": was way way better than the average stuff, but still it was kinda “meh”.
