Things That Repesent A City

Girls in bikinis playing beach tennis.

My Rio Grande Valley, Texas–a beautiful panoramic scene north of the Rio Grande River–lush citrus groves, swaying sugarcane fields, green palms. Filmed aerially from inside a Mexican military helicopter making an incursion over the U.S. border.

Flint Mi has the Citizens Bank weather ball.

I didn’t watch the video, but there are 7 pics at the link in the article.

For London, I always see The Eye.

Especially in later Dr Who.

Detroit - The Renaissance Center from the water, The Spirit of Detroit, “The Fist” in Hart Plaza.

Well…

There’s the Azrieli Towers, and there’s the Tel Aviv shoreline, but I think the most iconic Tel Aviv image would be one of its old Bauhaus buildings (that picture being a fairly accurate likeness of my neighborhood).

Melbourne - any streetscape involving a tram, preferably a W Class

Kansas City - Liberty Memorial
Indianapolis - Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Pagoda

First thing I thought of was the dome at the zoo.

Technically, that’s in Lake Buena Vista; same county, different creature altogether. Because of the way Orlando (and Central FL in general) is put together, there’s not a great set of “this is Orlando” type views; however, there are some things that are characteristic of different areas of Orlando. Downtown has Lake Eola and Church Street as major defining features, among other little neighborhoods [the Vietnamese (Mills-50) district, Orange Avenue, etc.] that are separated by sprawl. Kissimmee has the same issue, as we’ve got the Historic Downtown district, 192/Vine/Irlo Bronson (home of tacky tourist stores, inefficient traffic signals, and most of the Indian restaurants in the area), and cow pastures in between little tufts of development.
While we’re on the topic of areas of Florida,
Mount Dora: Fifth Avenue
Fort Lauderdale: Las Olas Boulevard, especially the beach wall view
Boca Raton: Any of the old Mizner buildings, large Mediterranean Revival mansions, Mizner Park

And just to be random,
Reykjavik: Hallgrimskirkja and the Leif Eriksson statue in front of it, Tjörn (especially the view of the Radhus from the pond), any view of the city buildings with Esja in the background.

Does anything particularly symbolize Vancouver, BC? For me it would have to be the Five Sails Restaurant (name?) at the Pan Pacific Hotel, but that’s probably because I arrived by sea and stayed at that hotel. What do the residents, and other Canadians, usually think of when you mention Vancouver? What do they use for establishing shots?

I quite enjoyed my visit there, though I didn’t have time to see much.

Vancouver? The first thing that comes to mind is that green-glass condo skyline with the mountains in the background. So no particular building, but the city as a whole. Even the Lions Gate bridge doesn’t come up immediately in my mind in the same way that the Golden Gate Bridge does for San Francisco.

San Diego: Hotel del Coronado
