One of my cousins married a woman (let’s call her Ann) who’d immigrated to the US from another country, along with her niece, her sister’s child (let’s call her Nancy). Ann had raised Nancy, as her sister died in childbirth and was unwed. They came to the US when Nancy was fairly young, IIRC.

I forget when this happened (some time in the '90s) but it was when Nancy was at least college age, maybe in med school by then, but her aunt told her a secret she’d been keeping - she was really her mother, not her aunt at all. It was so shameful to be an unwed mother (in their original country, was the implication) that Ann made up this lie and then got stuck with the story.

It was, again IIRC, less than a couple years later when Nancy killed herself.

I know she was a perfectionist and super-smart. I know that the whole med school/residency thing is really stressful. And I know there could have been a lot of other things going on in her life.

My family was happy for the two of them, that Ann could finally be open as Nancy’s real mom. But I wonder if Nancy felt somehow rejected, like she was too shameful of a thing for her mom to admit to, or if she felt pain that her mother essentially distanced herself all her life. It was never ‘this is my daughter/my mom - well close enough’ but very much ‘this is my niece/this is my aunt who raised me.’

Was she OK with the late revelation? Was it another burden on her shoulders that just added up? Or was it something she never came to terms with and such a deep pain that she couldn’t stand it?

Let’s see, off the top of my head:

D.B. Cooper’s fate

The Kidman-Cruise marriage (Og help me, I try not to use brain cells on this, but every once in a while…)

As a fan it’s kind of my business, but I’d like to know the real relationship between NBA referees, the league and how they’re managed/directed (I think most likely there’s nothing more nefarious than the league not caring at all how games are called as long as there’s lots of scoring and big stars don’t foul out, but I’m still curious)

Nope, didn’t move away until almost exactly a year later. However, that was in the period of time after my grandmother died that I changed jobs and moved from Dentsville to Trenholm Rd.

Makes more sense now that I might not have been paying as much attention to the concert scene.

**Zsofia** , I’ve long suspected you were younger than me, but did not realize by how much. 😉

**Kolga** , no, not the same girl - but now I really want to know what happened to your brother’s friend. Which is off the not-my-mollyfocking-business spectrum.

I also want to know what happened to the _Mary Celeste_. I’ve wanted to know that since I was a little kid.

That’s the one. Still missing. Never found. Not a trace of anything. And I want to know how that happens!!

I mean, intellectually I know that people disappear every day. This isn’t something new. But the circumstances were just so off-the-charts odd - my brother said that when he and his other friends left the bar (after losing track of Dail) there were still THOUSANDS of people in the streets in that area. And nobody saw anything? That does not compute for my rational brain.

Yes, that would explain it.

I like the theory listed in the “explosion” section of the [Wiki article](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Celeste). Basically, some of the barrels of alcohol in the hold (which the captain had been wary of) were made incorrectly and were intact but empty, suggesting they’d outgassed their alcohol - producin fumes that might have led to explosion fears and them abandoning ship. Check out the theory, it seems to be well-argued.

> Something weird is going on with the people in the house next to us. At one time, a man and woman lived there. They had some loud fights, apparently divorced, and moved out. Recently, the woman has reappeared. We suspect that she was squatting, because although we knew she was in there, she never had the lights on or came outside.
>
> One night, she did come out. She was super drunk and passed out in the yard of the neighbor on the other side of us. Paramedics took her away.
>
> Just a couple of weeks ago, there was yet another incident. This time she was super drunk, called the paramedics herself, and when they came, she was so belligerent that the cops came and took her away. The next day, the man who used to live there called us and asked us to make sure the front door was locked (but he didn’t give us any details, and damn it, the door _was_ locked).
>
> Now she’s back again, with a man we don’t know. They have electricity, and aren’t shy about being seen outdoors, so I guess it’s okay. However, a few days ago, a man came to our door. He told my daughter he was from the bank, and asked if she’d seen anyone living there. She told him yes.
>
> What the hell’s going on? Whatever it is, I’m glad we have an alarm system and a big scary dog.

The cops came out again last night. It was about ten, and we looked out to see the man talking to them, gesticulating and swigging from a bottle. The woman was nowhere to be seen. One policeman took some photos in the open garage, then proceeded through the house.
We went out and spoke to one of the cops, who said the house had been broken into and vandalized.

Odd that this was apparently discovered so late at night. If the man had just gotten home, why was there no car in the garage? Where was the woman?

I think infamous mysteries mentioned in this thread (i.e., the disappearance of people or the fate of the _Mary Celeste_) don’t really qualify as NOMB. It seems to me that this thread was aimed more at things that would create an awkward social situation if asked (such as the status of someone’s sexuality or how much your coworkers make).

Just my two cents.

Okay, I’ve got a new one.

We have this one patron who I used to think was high all the time. But I don’t think high can account for his behavior any more: I think he’s legitimately brain-damaged, and I’d like to know the deal. Obviously, I can’t say to him, “Dude, you can’t remember from one day to the next how to log on to the computers, nor do you seem to remember that you can’t remember\*. When you are shown how to log on, 9 time out of 10 you not only enter your card number incorrectly because you miss typing in one of the numbers, but it’s always the same number that you miss typing in. Practically every other time you’re in, you act like you’ve never needed a second session on the computers before because you don’t remember that yes, you’re allowed to log in twice a day. Seriously, what the f&ck?”

I just want to know what his dealio is.

- I mean, Jebus, even the guy in _Memento_ had that going for him (thanks to his “Remember Sammy Jankis” tattoo)

How my Uncle Nicky got out of the Vietnam draft? He won’t tell anyone exactly what he did except to say “it was embarassing,” but it convinced the Army he was unfit for duty. He was called up in 1969, a point at which I think the army could not be easily shocked, so I am morbidly curious to know just what he did.

My guess would be that he pretended to be gay.

Oh, there’s loads of patrons I want the skinny on. Like what the hell is up with the Checking Out Magazines Lady - we had to institute a limit because of her. Almost all cooking magazines. Is she unaware that we have probably tens of thousands of cookbooks upstairs? What does she \*do \* with them?

There used to be this guy who wore this homemade superhero costume all the time - never saw him out of it. It was blue and red with a cape. What was his deal? Very quiet, never bothered anybody, just, you know, wore a cape.

Mentally handicapped or disturbed perhaps?

I haven’t _felt_ too young lately - I turn 31 two weeks from now. 30 seemed, you know, kind of old, but somehow 31 seems so much older than 30. 31 is “in your thirties”!

I took it as the guy being very surprised to learn he could log in a second time to fix dumb mistakes, not remembering that he’s had to log in a second time _every other time he’s ever been there_.

No, it’s probably that you get two logins a day.
