Again, this may be out of date. Not being a drinker, I didn’t go to too many bars, and remember even fewer. The only one that I went to every so often is called The Red Lion. A basement bar that is kinda dark (the ceiling is covered with coasters!) in Waikiki, near the Denny’s (there’re two Denny’s, one is across from the zoo; The Red Lion is near the other one, a couple streets over from the IMAX/movie theatre). Sorry I don’t remember the address better. Another bar that was generally pretty fun was Moose McGillucudy’s (sp?).
You’re welcome. I second the San Souci beach and Natatorium if you’re gonna hit the beach again; a little less crowded than the main Waikiki beach. Hope you’re enjoying your stay!
I have two questions:
(1) Is skiing Mauna Loa worth it? I understand its a pretty short run…but I’d like to say that I skiied Hawaii!
(2) Is the Old Royal Hawaiin Hotel on Waikki still nice? I have a pre=war photo, and it was the only hotel there
Oh…and what does poi taste like?
Never been. My understanding is that it’s not really snow per se, more like bits of ice.
Sure. Link here. That’s where Duke’s is. (There’s a Duke’s on the island of Kauai also, which is absolutely stunning.)
Not a lot. IMO, not offensive, but not great either. Of course, who’s to say if what I had was well made? And there’s something about eating (naturally) purple paste that’s just odd enough to make it worthwhile.
Let’s see… lived on Oahu for 10 something years, and have a place in Maui. All I can think of to tell you is shop at Costco, and don’t let your head explode when you see the prices.
Maui is totally set up for romance. Laihina is the best right now with all the whales, and at Kaanapali there is some good snorkeling. Best tip: after snorkeling get you parking pass validated at the beach side bar while sipping a refreshing beverage and enjoying the music. That way you get all the best wile paying a pitance.
Bring a blankie on the plane… they tend to keep them kinda cold, yeah? And stay loose brah… no let the locals kind hassel you. Ever’ting slower kine.
Man, this stuff is expensive! And, it is SO hard to find 100% kona…most of the “kona” coffee sold seems to be a blend of “some” Kona and 90% something else.
Is real Kona all that great? I would assume (given the price of these beans) that anybody growing Kona coffee must be making a fortune-is the Hawaiin coffee production increasing?
I’m going to Oahu in March to attend a wedding. I’m looking for a relatively cheap hotel around the Waikiki area, which is where the wedding will be held. The hotel the couple is recommending is pretty pricy - $300+ per night.
I’m going to be there 3 nights. My ordered criteria are:
Safe - I’m bringing scuba gear for diving in Maui after the wedding, so I really don’t want my room ransacked.
Clean
And that’s it. I’ll be by myself - my wife and I are doing separate vacations this year - so a tiny room is fine.
There are plenty of budget hotels on orbitz, travelocity, etc. but they all have their share of horrible reviews. So I’m looking for some advice from Dopers who may have been in Waikiki recently, where did you stay, how did you like it, how much did you pay?
