My husband worked in Toronto for 6 months. I spent a couple of long weekends up there. My favorite things were getting the pee scared out of my in the CN tower and going to Niagra Falls. I know that’s not exactly in Toronto, but it wasn’t too far of a drive when I’d come all the way from Missouri. And then we were going to go to a science museum one day. I think it was the Ontario Science Center. We got there right at opening and thought we’d spend a couple of hours and then find something else to do. At closing time they were kicking us out and we weren’t done playing. And this was before we had children! Anyway, I’ve got to recommend that place. Sorry, I didn’t see a whole lot else.
Lot’s of good suggestions. Sounds like the Ontario Science Center might be fun.
That’s the kind of quirky museum that is often a great experience. “I was in Toronto and went to a shoe museum.”
I would be interested in getting together if other people are. I’ve never met any real live Dopers in the wild. RealityChuck said he’ll be in Toronto the same weekend. I’m not entirely sure of my schedule yet, but I’ll probably be getting in late Friday afternoon and leaving Monday morning. I may be busy Saturday during the day. Let me know if someone wants to organize something.
organize i will not, but i think a toronto jamboree is a fine idea.
As mentioned by others, The AGO is an excellent art museum, and the Science Centre out in North York is worth a look.
If you find yourself on Queens Street by the City TV/Much Music studio, and in need of liquid refreshment, you can hoist a Rickards Red in the Beverly right across the street. It’s a good funky sort of bar.
There’s tons of great restaurants in Toronto. One of the coolest IMHO, is the Marche Movenpick in the BCE Place building at Bay and Wellington. It’s a huge restaurant with numerous open air kitchens. You stroll around from kitchen to kitchen picking out what dishes you would like. Great atmosphere, good food, excellent for people watching.
A fancier, but still casual, great restaurant is the Courthouse Market Grill on Adelaide Street. It’s housed in the former Toronto city courthouse, hence the name, and has great food. The building itself is beautiful and worth walking around. On the upper floor is a nightclub which is a good place to hang out and do the sort of things one does in nightclubs.
For urban flavor, a walk down Yonge Street is worthwhile. If you like books, check out The Worlds Biggest Bookstore at Yonge and Elm.
Yes, Yoda.
JeffB – I see you’re from Saratoga. I’m in Schenectady.
I’ll be arriving Saturday around 2:00. I’ll probably be free that evening. Sunday looks busy, though – conference meetings and a reception at night, plus I have to change hotels. (Where are you staying, BTW?)
My recommendations for tourist attractions are the Royal Ontario Museum, the Metro Zoo, the CN Tower, and Chinatown. I also always check out the World’s Biggest Bookstore and the numerous used book stores along Yonge Street. All except the zoo are downtown.
And if there’s a Toronto Dopefest in the works put me down as a possibility.
Heh, I do tech support for an ISP in the building directly beside The Courthouse. To be honest, the menu there scares me though (they have it posted out in front).
A T.O. Dopefest sounds like fun.
Okay, folks, new thread. Yup… we’re trying to organize a Toronto DopeFest for the weekend in question…
Check it out!
So, we live probably about 30 miles apart, and we’re both going to travel about 400 miles to meet. What conference are you going to? It’s not the SCT conference is it? Anyway, I’ve posted in theotherangel’s thread (thanks for organizing!), and I’ll keep that one updated with my info. I’ll check back here for more ideas on things to do.
Bingo, JeffB. SCT Summit it is. I’m in the Educational Track. Maybe we’ll see each other at the reception or concert (right – there are about 5000 attending).
Let’s see, you live in Schenectady, you’re going to the SCT Summit in the Educational Track, so I’m guessing you work an Union. Am I right?
I’m not actually going to the conference myself. My current employer (Skidmore) is not a Banner client, but my previous employer (Villanova) is. A number of my friend from Villanova are going to the conference, so I figured, what the hell, I’ll drive up and see them. Maybe I’ll sneak into something. I worked with Banner for almost six years, so I deserve it.
Close. I live in Schenectady, but I work at Siena.
