I don’t bother with the “do I have it/need it?” question when faced with daily staples. I tend to impulse purchase these items, and then discover in delight that it was just in the nick of time. Not on purpose. Honest. Van Morrison CD. Have danced to it just about every day since. Mercedes Lackey. Sharon Kay Penman. Charles de Lint. Wilbur Smith. These authors have cost me more money, and given more joy, than any other. I often don’t even think about going into the book store. I’m just suddenly in front of the shelves saying, “got it, got it, need it, got it, got it, GOTCHA!!!” and then I run triumphantly to the cash register. Why the men with the white jackets aren’t waiting for me there, I do not know. ---

I am the opposite. I will impulse buy something in one shop, knowing full well If I walk a few yards down the road I might find it cheaper. I usually do find it cheaper. ---

Years ago, I bought anything Heinlein did, sight unseen, money no object. Then he died. Then I bought anything Niven & Pournelle did. Then they started to suck. Then I bought anything Clancy did. Then he started to suck. Now I buy anything Pratchett does. Funny thing: his early work kinda sucked, but he has gotten steadily better ever since. It’s refreshing to find an author who doesn’t start to suck once he gets good. ---
