"The moral of the date-rape story,
It does not pay to be drunk and horny.
But that’s the way it had to be.
They locked him up and threw away the key.
Well, I can’t take pity on men of his kind,
Even though he no takes it in the behind."
“(There Goes) My Hero” by Foo Fighters. It’s about how average, every day folks are heroic.
“Old Man and Me” by Hootie and the Blowfish. This song has a nice message to it about recognizing the futility of war (this theme was mentioned in an earlier post).
[This next entry is rap, but don’t discard it instantly.]
“Slippin’” by DMX. This is a deep, autobiographical song about his struggle through life. Pretty interesting.
Overall, I haven’t heard nearly as much music as most of you. But of course, I’m probably half to one-third of your age. Just gotta get acquainted with the oldies.
God, music’s had such an effect on me growing up…
Pink Floyd showed me the pointlessness of war and how miserable other people were besides my self absorbed teenage self.
From The Clash I learned about the relationship of goverment to the little guy.
From Public Enemy I learned just a little bit what it was like outside of white middle class suburbia.
The Pogues got me interested in Ireland and immigration.
But I remember an obscure little ditty that seems kind of saccharine to me now but at the time inspired me to do something besides grow old and die in a little go nowhere blue collar town. “When I Was Young” by Bob Geldof. This isn’t the whole song but a sample of the lyrics:
On the other hand, I should send Henry Rollins a hand written note for getting me through an especially bad break-up years ago. Leave it to Henry for letting you know somebody out there is infinately more pissed off, depressed and screwed over than you could ever dream of being. Listening to End Of The Silence is probably the closest I’ll get to primal scream therapy.
Though nowadays I find great wisdom in Guy Lombardo’s Enjoy Yourself…
“The world is kinder to the kind who won’t look back”
(End of my Pirate Days)
“Sometimes we’re blinded by the very thing we need to see”
(The Last Word)
“In this world there’s a whole lot of trouble, baby
In this world there’s a whole lot of pain
In this world there’s a whole lot of trouble
But a whole lot of ground to gain
Why take when you could be giving
Why watch as the world goes by
It’s a hard enough life to be living
Why walk when you can fly”
(Why Walk When You Can Fly)
Never trust a man in a blue trench coat.
Never drive a car when you dead.
Tom Waits
When you ask for a fag in Texas, smile.
The Fall
(don’t laugh, that could save the lives of a lot of Englishmen)
“I don’t know how to love him” (Jesus Christ Superstar)
(Though I’m sure Esprix would disagree)
“If you get confused, listen to the music play” (Franklin’s Tower) by GD; Thank you Jerry, words I live by.
“She knows nothing at all about life, but she knows everything about living” by Moe (no, my user name has nothing to do with them)
I’ve also learned that:
-if you’re senses are impaired psychologically, you can still achieve spiritual enlightenment through playing pinball.
-Life goes on within me and without me, so I’m really not that important.
-Parents don’t have to understand kids, and kids don’t have to understand parents. Just sigh at each other and know they love you. (a warm thank you to Stephen Stills).
-“Of course this land is dangerous, all of the animals are capably murderous” - Jane’s Addiction
-“It is here. It is now” - Genesis
-If I ever have kids, taking them to Disneyworld will not be pleasant. - Uncle Bonsai
“You’ve got to have a dream. If you don’t have a dream, how’re you gonna have a dream come true?”
I think it’s from South Pacific, although I have to confess I first heard the Captain Sensible version.
Lyrics for the first, there are so many good songs!
“Half a Moment” Andrew Lloyd Webber;“Without you”, “Seasons of Love” and “Take Me or Leave Me” from RENT; “I am a Rock” and “Sounds of Silence” Simon and Garfunkle are a few of my many, many favorites.
Music has also taught me to read in more languages than I can think. To be sencitive to the emotion and meaning hidden behind the slightest of motions and words. To be part of something transcending myself. The drama and poetry and passion encapsulated and communicated through music is a fantastic thing.
Music taught me to truly listen and feel the world around me, reacting to what I feel. To give back and love the giving, filling space with my self, spirit, and voice.
And I can breathe really well.
Oh yea, and my sig. From “The Rainbow Connection” in the Muppet Movie.
She’s scared of the spiders/
and she’s scared of the dark/
she’s scared of the bogeyman/
in that park/
but if anybody screws with me/
you know she’ll cut their balls off.

So true.
William Randolph Hearst owned a lot of newspapers, and Patty Hearst joined the SLA
–The Mystical Knights of Oingo Boingo
Ok, so I knew that already, but if I didnt, the song would have taught me.
Well this is my first post to the SDMB and being a music major, I felt a compassion to reply.
Some lyrics for me:
-most Creed songs. For example, “America” -->
“Only in America we stamp our god, ‘In God We Trust’”
-from the good ol’ Canadian band Sloan, “If you admit that you are wrong, then I’ll admit that I’m right.”
-I don’t know if it just relates to me a lot, but the song “Everything you want” by Vertical Horizon has a lot of meaning:
“I am everything you want, I am everything you need.
I am everything inside of you that you wish you could be.
I say all the right things at exactly the right time,
but I mean nothing to you and I don’t know why.”
Southern Style, you learn that from Bob Seger (The Late Great Break-Up Song, I think) or Poison (Something to Believe In)?
If, for any reason, I start to think I’ve got it bad, my brain hits me with :
“Every fool’s got a reason for feelin’ sorry for himself
And turning his heart to stone” – Bruce Springsteen, “Better Days”
I’ll second the Beatles “In My Life”, and mention I really like “Least Complicated”. A few years ago, my girlfriend at the time and I had just spent time trying to, but not, communicating. After I’d thought she left, I put that song on, and she stopped on the landing, turned around and came back up.
But my best lesson about communication comes from Hothouse Flowers, “One Tongue” :
What in the world caused this distance?
What in the world hurt our hearts?
And what are we to do about it?
Where are we to start?
We have an answer, it is language
It might be silence, it might be words
But it includes some understanding, and it includes the will to learn
(later in the same song)
Yes! there are many many questions
Yes! there is red tape on the ground
The simple truth can cut through anything
panama jack
tonight this fool’s halfway to heaven and a mile out of hell.
“You say you got a six inch guarantee
Of unilateral security
Well me and Stalin we just signed
A mutual non-aggression pact.
Today is the first of September…”
from “I’ll Meet You in Poland, Baby”
Scraping Foetus off the Wheel
I’ve always found this song very helpful for remembering important facts about the Second World War.
“You may be right. I may be crazy, but it just may be a lunatic you’re looking for.” - Billy Joel
“Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they’re here to stay. Oh I believe in yesterday.” - John Lennon
“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.”
-John Lennon
“'Cause I’ve seen blue skies through the tears in my eyes, and I realize I’m going home.” -I’m Going Home [RHPS]
“You say I wanted you to be proud of me
I always wanted that myself
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast”
-Tori Amos, “Winter”
“you cut off all of your fingers
trade them in for dollar bills
cake on some more make-up to
cover up all those lines
wake up and stop shaking
'cause you’re just wasting time.”
-Marilyn Manson, “Dried up, Tied, and Dead to the World”
Apparently, my husband will stop the world and melt with me if I find a free (and legal, I swear, pldennison) copy of Modern English’s song for his computer.
