Been studying anthropology recently and, for some reason reconstructions of the [earlier hominids](http://www.bradshawfoundation.com/origins/skulls/homo_habilis2.jpg) really creep me out in an ‘uncanny valley’ way, [Australopithecus afarensis](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5e/Australopithecus_afarensis.JPG/800px-Australopithecus_afarensis.JPG) and the likes of [Sahelanthropus](http://www.daynes.com/images/photos/galeries/362-700w172750.jpg?v=2) are fucking [terrifying](http://thumbs.media.smithsonianmag.com//filer/e8/5b/e85bd6ec-f4fd-420a-8cbe-903a0e309e58/0039201edit.jpg__800x600_q85_crop.jpg). But as far as I know most people don’t find ‘cavemen’ creepy, just stupid and brutish. Is there anything that creeps you out that society at large is fine with? ---

Well they’re not exactly cute. I’m not sure how rare this opinion is but I find the \*Christ the Redeemer \*statue to be rather unsettling. In fact my official name for it is “Creepy Jesus statue”. The first thing I thought of when I learned the Olympics were to be held in Rio was " oh great, non stop footage of Creepy Jesus". [This building](https://www.google.com/maps/@27.7965872,-82.6467698,3a,75y,201.87h,116.75t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sealeacRX9SKyO0coACbr9Q!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) doesn’t look particularly intimidating in this screen shot but it gives me the willies. In fact, IRL people know I call it “The Evil Building”. I have no idea why but something about it really disturbs me. Especially at night when the top of it is lit with orange lights. When you drive towards it it just. . . \*looms \*like some alien space station from Hell \ ---

When people are parked, just sitting in their cars. Don’t they have somewhere to go or anything else to do? I know there’s nearly always some reasonable answer like “He’s waiting for somebody…”, but I can’t help but think of these people as downright creepy. ---

Put me in an environment with perfectly straight featureless walls and ceilings that meet at a perfect 90° angle and I’m severely uncomfortable. Put me out in a huge open space that is characterized by uniformity and lack of identifying characteristics and I’m not happy there either. Sort of the inverse of claustrophobia. When I go into a food-serving place, and the waitstaff/counter person remembers me and/or what I like to order. It deeply offends me on some level - it feels like an invasion of privacy. I know, I’m weird. ---

I was raised in southern California, where we were always in view of some encircling, comforting mountains. Once my husband and I were thinking of moving to Colorado, and we flew there to check out the area where had a job offer. The place was a flat, featureless prairie in all directions and it gave me the heebie-jeebies. My husband hated it, too - said it was the kind of place where you could look straight ahead and see the back of your own head. He turned down the job offer. ---

Schools with dress codes that don’t allow shorts or skirts higher than the knee, but who willingly put the cheerleaders in miniskirts that readily flop all the way up out in public for all to see. ---

While I don’t find this creepy or offensive, I generally prefer that waiters, store employees, and call center staff, etc. don’t remember me. There’s something about anonymity that’s comforting. (Until, that is, I have an issue that needs follow-up contact. :p) I don’t ever want to be famous. ---

One that was probably intended as creepy, but I don’t know how many people other than me got it: In the video game _Portal 2_, there are sections where you’re deep in the ancient bowels of Aperture Labs, with tubes and tanks full of various chemicals. All of them bear hazard placards labeled [sub]0[/sub][sup]0[/sup][sub]0[/sub]. I mean, I know that in a place like that, any kind of chemical they’re working with is probably hazardous as Hell. That doesn’t bother me. But the labeling? That does. ---

Tree roots torn up out of the ground. Like, if a large tree has fallen over during a storm, and afterwards you see the roots exposed and forming a sort of huge, dirty encrusted, rooty wall. The sight always frightened me as a child and still creeps me out as a grown-up. Similar sort of creepiness with large ships up out of the water with their barnacle-encrusted hulls exposed. Probably some deep psychological reason for it, but I couldn’t say what. ---

As for me, we have cats and they like meat baby food as a treat, so sometimes we get store coupons for baby-related stuff. The one we get nearly every week is for a photographer, and the photo on it is of these two naked, very young babies clinging to each other. I think it’s supposed to be endearing, but I find it creepy and unsettling, like they’re still in their larval stage and not finished yet. Every week I announce to the spouse, “Oh, look, we got the larval baby coupon again!” before chucking it out as quick as I can. ---
