According to some posters, speaking French is pretentious. That got me thinking. What do Dopers find pretentious? I’ll make my list: Dancers (Not people who like to boogie, people have taken a class or two and think the WHOLE world wants to know) People with hypenated last names People who occansionally wear glasses. They all seem to own the same thick black hipster pair. :rolleyes: (Maybe it’s the same fucking pair and their on loan at all times) iPhones/iPad users There’s more, but those are the things that I see and immediately think “This person thinks they’re better than me/the average person”. ---

I don’t need them for day-to-day sight whilst walking around, so you won’t see me wearing them most of the time. They’re a a thick black-rimmed pair because they were the only ones out of the “budget” range that was 100% covered by my health insurance that suited my face. I find it pretentious to assume the way you (general you) were bought up to use the language is the only way to do so. Especially on the internet, where anyone you’re talking to could be from any number of countries separated by a common language. ---

I mean people who like literally wear glasses one WHOLE day for them to never be seen again. I know some people wear them for distance, reading, or driving. ---

Boaty folks (as opposed to boat owners) - that is, people for whom ownership of the large boat is about status, rather than sailing. Students who spent their gap years in India or Nepal and came back acting like a cross between Gandhi and Gandalf. ---

I’m not sure I find any one thing to be pretentious. What annoys me is when someone takes something inconsequential and blows it up into something they gad about trying to look special. Like people who bleat about how their beer just has to be at the proper temperature, or tell anyone within earshot that they’ll never drive a car with an automatic transmission, and so on. So, I guess the TL;DR is things aren’t pretentious, people are. ---

Really expensive watches - they just sit on your wrist to provide a really simple function. People who “can’t understand how anyone can like X.” X being any of a list of things they don’t like. I think expensive engagement rings and lavish weddings are a qrotesque waste of money but understand that most people are pissing away the money out of a feeling of obligation. ---

Being a white person in East Asia, except for myself. Well, not now, but it’s a stage we all go through: I hope I’ve grown up since then. But I see other people going through the same stage all the time – and they noticing it in others and being annoyed by it in turn. It’s called something like “foreigner non-acknowledgment syndrome” – how dare you intrude into my cultural _experience_ . . . . Needless to say, it’s a very silly attitude. ---
