Filling the car with gas. Of course, gas it’s the cheapest it’s been in forever, but not driving anywhere drives it down further than that. ---

Getting up at 0500 every day to drive the almost 40 miles one-way to get to work. I love my job, I love my students, and I really miss about 99% of it. But the early morning wake-up and long commute – and filling my tank every 3 days – I’m happy to take a break from. ---

I’m working from home. I don’t miss endless meetings. We have 1 long conference call per week now, and what do you know? Business rolls right along. You know the saying “that meeting should have been an email”? Working from home has proven that to be very true in 90% of cases. Looking at my Outlook calendar, there were 11 scheduled this week. All were cancelled except 1. ---

I don’t miss the commute every day. It involves a bus to the train station, a train to the city, then a bus out to campus. Even more, I don’t miss the schoolkids that travel the same time/route as I do. I don’t miss having to wear “business clothes”, I am sitting here in comfortable stuff with nothing on my feet. I don’t bother with “proper” clothes unless I have to go out of the house. I don’t miss sports programmes in the slightest. I don’t miss inane chat shows either. ---

Over the last 6 months I’ve had a zillion headhunters emailing me: “Oh, you do Filemaker! We have an opportunity for you!! It’s in Spokane Washington, or Birmingham Alabama, or Pocatello Idaho! You have the perfect credentials for the job! Are you interested?” I’d write back: “Umm, are they ok with remote work? I’m in Long Island NY. Not particularly interested in relocating, especially for a 6 month / 1 year / etc opportunity” And they’d say: “Ermm, the employer reallly was hoping for someone who would come in to the office…” COVID-19 strikes Now: “Oh, you do Filemaker! We have an opportunity for you!! It’s in Spokane Washington, or Birmingham Alabama, or Pocatello Idaho! You have the perfect credentials for the job! Are you interested? We totally understand that you’d be working remotely…” ---

I don’t miss having to justify not going to a funeral. No funeral occurring. Sympathy phone call to the surviving spouse was all that was needed anyway. Just because daisy-pusher married someone with whom I share DNA doesn’t mean I had to like him. Now I’m spared the calculus of having other family members think I’m the bad guy for not wanting to waste my time vs. wasting time traveling and going to a ceremony for someone I didn’t like. Thanks, quarantine!! ---

Somewhat similar to the post above, I certainly don’t miss having to justify not traveling 2000+ miles to visit a relative. It’s not that I never want to visit them ever, it’s just that I didn’t want to visit them _now_, as i have other things on my plate. I’ll stop short of saying they guilt-ed me into visiting, but they came as close as they could. Before “_it_” hit, I was in the midst of finalizing travel plans for a trip I really didn’t want to make till later. Now I’m off the hook, as it were. ---

Sitting in a noisy open-plan office all day. Now I work in a comfortable, private home office. I go out for three or four walks during the day, and if it means taking twenty minutes out from work, nobody cares. (I’d probably have spent a lot more than that chatting with people in the office instead.) I’m getting a lot _more_ exercise than before the lockdown. I’m healthier and happier. I’m going to fight tooth and nail against going back to that damn office. Who needs it?! ---

My gf is working from home. During normal times, we wake up at 5:30, care for the horses, etc. She normally would leave the house at 7:30 am and work roughly 9-6. Now, working from home, we are still waking up at 5:30 and she begins work at 7. She doesn’t miss driving 2 1/2 hours each day. In an effort to stopping work at a reasonable time, we’ve had a standing date for a 5:30 walk in the woods with our dogs. At 5:30 I’m ready to go, with a mini cooler that holds three beers.
