# Things you know are dumb but do anyway.

There’s this right wing message board I lurk at but never ever post to. These guys are beyond Limbaugh, beyond Coulter, beyond Fox News, right into the lunatic fringe. They are about as far as you can go without declaring yourself a neo-nazi (and I have my doubts about one or two of them). We’re talking wishing deaths on every muslim man, woman, and child for 9/11 without the irony. We’re talking advocating a new civil war between the North and the South while calling Lincoln a “douchebag.” We’re talking about how “darkies” in Louisiana brought refugee status upon themselves. The _owner_ of the board actually said this. We’re talking _real_ lost souls here.
I’ve never posted to this board. I felt that no good could come of it, and it’s wrong to stir up hornets’ nests, and nothing’s going to help these people anyway. I lurk because watching genuinely disturbed people interests me for some reason. Also because when I’m feeling down about myself, a half hour on this board is enough to convince me that I’m at least somewhat worthy. Why screw that up and get banned or worse? So I’ve never posted.
Until tonight.
Tonight, the owner is going off about how illegal aliens should be shot on sight and how all cops are assholes for not doing so. I have relatives who are cops, and I must have been in some sort of weird mood, because the next thing I know, I’ve engaged him in a debate, and suddenly, I’ve posted exactly what I think about him and his silly, fucked-up message board. I’m not going to reiterate it here, because it’s better suited to the pit, but suffice to say, I didn’t offer to buy girlscout cookies from him.
So I’m just sitting here thinking about how this is not the first board I’ve ever done this in, and how one of these days some _real_ crank is going to track me down over the net and cancel my check. It occured to me to go ahead and share this with people I actually like and respect–even though I get exasperated sometimes–and ask for things that _you_ do that are potentially very, _very_ bad for your health.
Oh, I overeat, too. So pissing off right wingnuts and Weimar Republicans and overeating. If anything’s going to kill me in the next couple of years, that’ll probably be it.
No, I’m not going to give out the name of the board, so don’t even ask. I don’t want to start a board war, and these scummy little cretin brains are _so_ not worth it.

Are you my (asshole) brother?
On topic: I engage in debate with people who are logic-impaired (like my brother). I don’t know why I keep doing it. No good ever comes of it. I guess it’s a sort of compulsion. I just can’t seem to let another’s stupid or illogical statement pass without comment.
To my credit I, occasionally, get in a zinger that seems to force someone to actually think–but far too often the people I argue with leave imagining that they won.
I guess I need to hone my ignorance-fighting skills.

I stick my hand in the garbage disposal if something gets stuck. No, I do not cut the power at the box first. My partner gets so angry at me for doing that. I know it’s dumb. Very dumb. So far I’m still intact.

I used to post to a message board where one of the more-respected posters put forth the idea that a thermonuclear response was appropriate for any nation connected to 9/11. I asked him if this was true for the nation that trained the pilots. He said yes, and I asked if there were any posters from Florida that still thought he was making sense…
