Here’s the late, great Humphrey Lyttelton: An interviewer had researched Lyttelton’s other interests and asked him about “orthinology” (sic). Lyttelton said that he kept a straight face and answered the question but 24 hours later thought of what he should have replied: “Oh, you mean word-botching”. ---

Dog walkers round here have a habit of letting their dogs off the lead on bike trails. Usually a dog running around on the bike trail is no worse than annoying. But if you pass someone who you don’t realize has dog, and then the dog comes flying out of the undergrowth and onto the trail in front of you without any warning, that’s downright dangerous - for me and the dog. That’s happened to me a few times. The last time it happened (on a National Cycle Route, no less) the guy said, in a bored voice: “Sorry mate, it’s the dog.” Far to late I realized the correct response is: “Who put the dog in charge?” And while they chew on that: “Someone who knows you, I guess?” With those lines sorted and ready to go… it has never happened to me since.
