Things you think are awesome and other dopers should know about

Radio Paradise. Free, Commercial free, listener supported Internet radio. Smooth and GOOOOOD music.

Chickens, when raised from a young age, need little upkeep and are adorable yard pets. They follow you around, interested in your activities, and can be picked up like a pet if you raise them right.

And they lay eggs, which you can eat. And few of you have ever truly enjoyed a really fresh egg. They are magnificent!

And if you don’t own roosters, they are quiet enough.

Cambodian diplomat slams BBC Radio 4

But then, what does he know? Myself, I much prefer BBC’s 24-hour news network to CNN. Which is a good thing, as in our condo building, BBC is piped in free, and CNN has to be subscribed to through cable, which we don’t have. I understand you can watch BBC News in the US now too.

I learned this from Legend of Zelda. But, don’t hit 'em with your sword too many times, or you’ll get an uneggspected surprise.

Bring me the three-burner barbecue of Alfredo Garcia.

Apart from the aforementioned QI, my favouritest show ever, the other UK series that I watched recently which seems down the SDMB alley was Balderdash and Piffle, hosted by Victoria Coren, who is the daughter of notable humorist Alan Coren. It’s a documentary that explored word origins, in an attempt to find earlier citations of some common and obscure words and phrases to update the OED, searching the country for contributions from regular folk. Fascinating and fun.

British Top Gear! I’m sure a lot of you already know about this (British AND American), but I don’t care. I know fuck all about cars, but the show is hilarious. (Also, Richard Hammond is hot.)

I’ve not seen the American version, but I hear it sucks, so I might not bother.

Hyperbole and a Half. Cracks me up 7-8 times out of 10, which is a pretty good record for a humor blog.

Loved their episode from Vietnam.

These songs.

These musical visualizations, and others like them.

The Sopranos.

The Wire.

Oh - and Gary Larson’s cartoons.

Edit: and Monty Python

I once went to an art show of nothing but Gary Larson’s work/cartoons. It was packed full of people and everyone was chuckling/laughing. It was a wonderful experiance.

Speaking of Victoria Coren, her quiz show Only Connect is well worth watching. If you think you’re smart, that show will quickly disabuse you of the notion.

I agree. I wish she’d post more often. I particularly like her posts about her dogs.

My addition is something I just found today. Well, someone. She’s a local artist. I’m fairly new to this town but I recognized her last name and realized that her parents are my neighbors. However, I’ve never met her. Anyway, I found an exhibit of her work at the library today and one of her colored pencil pieces literally stopped me dead in my tracks. Unfortunately it’s not on her website but Water Pollution is and it’s another one from the exhibit that really wow’d me. It’s not often that art grabs hold of me and wont let go. Opal’s self-portrait was the first time. Marley Lanctot’s exhibit today was the second time.

I’ve emailed her to find out if she’ll be selling the one I want. I really hope she says yes. I’m so tempted to go ask her mom if she still lives at home so I can tell her in person how much I enjoyed her work. But, since I already emailed her, it would probably come off as a bit creepy-stalkerish (even though I’m friendly with her mom and not even remotely creepy).

That was funny.

X-Entertainment in general and especially the annual Advent calendar.

The OKCupid blog. They troll through the few million users to answer with statistical certainty questions like How your race affects whether people respond to your messages and “myspace angles” don’t work, do they? Surely they don’t.

Consistently well researched, interesting premises immediately relevant to anyone on the dating scene.

Wholly Guacamole. If you’re a guac-head and are looking for a good, fresh guac when you can’t find any ripe avocados, buy this stuff. It’s awesome. It’s usually in the produce section of your grocery store, where the fresh salsa and hummus is sold.

Clubman brand talcum powder. If you’re a dude and you get haircuts there’s a good chance that you’ve been dusted with it before. It’s cheap, it’s good for keeping your nuts and feet dry throughout the day and it smells like a million dollars, but only costs a couple of bucks.
