Note that in this context “meat” just has its antique meaning of “food” generally, not “animal flesh”. Suet, unqualified, is indeed meat fat, but so is lard, and no-one particularly thinks of, say, pastry as having meat in it even if it was made with lard. Vegans and members of several religions will beg to differ, naturally.
As mentioned above, in the UK a mince pie contains mincemeat, whereas a pie made with a mince filling is another matter entirely. Tradition!
Which is what confuses people, I think, as ‘mincemeat’ doesn’t actually contain any meat.
I think they used to have meat in them, back in the mists of time, a meat and fruit pie with exotic spices, which isn’t that weird when you look at moroccan and middle eastern cuisine. I wonder if it’s an inheritance from the crusades?
Once when I was a kid, I made a mincemeat pie. I, too, was curious about whether it actually contained meat, so I checked the ingredients list of the mince I had bought. Which very helpfully listed “Ingredients: Mince”.
Following the UN’s exhortationthat the world needs to take advantage of the protein offered from insect consumption this is a perfect way of getting people used to the idea.
We were listing pies grandma used to make during dinner yesterday and mincemeat is the one I miss the most. I don’t remember if she made her own filling or bought it, but it was always one of my favorites.
Haven’t bought any in a while. Need to get some soon…
Any name that will make it popular is fine with me.
