Thinking of teaching in Thailand, advice?

I am thinking of going to teach English in Thailand (Bangkok). A friend did it a few years ago through an agency and she still knows some folks over there.

Why? Well, I teach Art in Philadelphia and I have now been laid off four times. I have never even been out of the country or lived outside of the Northeast. I think this may be a good time for a drastic change. My family is split on this idea of leaving the country mostly from a safety standpoint. But I think it would make me a better teacher and give me a new perspective on things.
If I were to leave in October, what should I do to prepare?

Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about teaching English in Thailand can be found on this site. The website can be a bit daunting, but if you start by clicking on the “Newbies start here” link, that will help sort out the stuff for you.

As far as safety goes, you’re probably safer in Bangkok than you are in Philly.

The real shocker for someone who’s never been out of the Northeast is going to be the weather. Take the hottest, most humid of summer days in Philadelphia. Stretch that out into several months’ worth. Get the picture?
