I’m sorry to know that this is still an exception to the policy now. I think it’s a good idea if is is made clear at the very beginning that it is for well-wishers only and shouldn’t contain final efforts to wound.

This thread shouldn’t contain barbed comments about mental illness anymore than it would any other illness. It’s a little bit like telling a cancer patient that you’re sorry to hear his leg rotted off.

Here are some of the sorts of things that were posted in this thread that I did not think were “supportive”:

“Dude was nuts.” (in the OP)
“Maybe he is only banned in his world…”
Two references to “meltdowns”
Comments about the possibility of other threatening behavior
A comment on his “fucked up, dysfunctional relationship”

All of these were posted before Post #10 where **twickster** said:

I disagree that these comments were “all supportive and wishing KGS well.” YMMV

I agree. “May you get cured of your fucking nutjobbery” is not a wish of wellness, but a veiled insult.

You took that quote out of context. My comment was saying that KGS’ relationship with the SDMB was dysfunctional. That is not a slam on KGS; it’s a comment on how we, as a message board, interacted with him. It takes two to be dysfunctional in a relationship, the part you snipped out of my quote made that clear. I take no stance on whether or not he was mentally ill, putting a persona, a little of both. I am not qualified to diagnose him over the internet. Regardless of what is going on with him, our collective relationship with him was not healthy for him. I would urge you to see that as much a comment on/ criticism of us as on him.

> “Wishing someone well” is, as we can see through the continued existence of this thread, acceptable. It is also highly unusual – most people who have misbehaved to the point at which their bannings become necessary aren’t those with deep reservoirs of good will or sympathy. (Far more of the people we ban are straight-up assholes, as opposed to those who are clearly struggling with psychological issues.)

I think it is very kindhearted of you to handle this the way you are. Being a mod doesn’t have to mean breaking bad all the time.
