"This is a Catholic country". Your foetus is more important than your life.

This is small consolation, but a small ray of light from this mess: a good friend of mine happens to be a physician in a conservative part of the US and currently has a patient with a beating-heart, but doomed, fetus. In the past, she’s had to fight with hospital and nursing staff to get pregnant women the treatment they needed. This time, with this debacle recently in the news, the nursing staff were immediately and completely supportive. Hopefully, this will last.

I’m amazed and heartened that the news of Savita’s needless death has travelled that far and has had an impact.

Unlikely, sadly. Maddow was reporting tonight that several states are already back on the anti-abortion, anti-birth control trail. :frowning:

There have been solidarity demonstrations in many different parts of Europe and North America (and I presume India). The most interesting one I’ve heard of so far was in Skopje, Macedonia.

Thank you. A lot. On a personal level, as well. This whole thing hasn’t done good things for my opinion of human nature; seeing people from other countries take the time to try and help with something that doesn’t affect them at all, just out of empathy and a sense of right and wrong, really makes a difference.

Thanks  It’s starting to feel like a much better idea now that I’m not puking every few hours.

What do I know, but I wouldn’t say a letter would get much suspicion. A package, yes, like An Gadaí said - but we’re a lot less serious about complex security than the US. Basically, our politicians might worry about a pipe bomb, but the general assumption is that anyone sophisticated enough to be messing about with anthrax isn’t going to be arsed with the likes of Richard Bruton.

Probably the opening shot in their medical malpractice lawsuit defense.

The symposium occurred before Savita’s death.

AN ABORTION BILL put forward by Deputy Clare Daly has been voted down by 101 votes to 27 this evening.

That’s sad.

In a completely unrelated, yet catholic religious matter, what’s the status of gay marriage in Ireland?
ETA: Is SF Sinn Féin? And why would they be the yeses?

We’ve got civil partnerships for same sex couples. Not 100% yet but we’re getting there.

SF is indeed Sinn Féin. They’re a leftwing party and leftwing voters are typically pro-choice.
