Although I fail to understand the hassle over the service number. The VA is weird. Hell, the service is weird for that matter. For compensation, they only go by the visible condition of the injury and how it limits physical activity. They don’t often take into consideration how much long term pain comes from it, especally if the pain comes on later in life. Bone spurs and so forth. And exactly how do you measure pain, anyway? I have a friend with both legs off, one above the knee and one below. He rides around in an electric sick sled. Every now and then, before he had his 10 years, the VA used to call him in and measure his stumps. He says that if one of them grew, he’ll be SOL for his disability. He hasn’t been called in for a long time, now and neither have I. The VA’s mostly quit trying to cut us. Oddly, PTSS gets disability easily, or so I’m told. Is Rosey a disabled vet? Don’t know, and unless she’s a DAV member, I’ll never find out for sure, and most likely, not then. Dianne, I admire the folks who help the disabled veterans with counseling and support. One once helped me get a blaster’s license. Guess I’ve kinda hijacked. Sorry 'bout that. Here’s the point (finally): There are a lot of wannabe, war heros out there. OMG…I’ve got these guys yelling at me to say this and say that… Bottom line, after reading Dianes’ last post is this… The reason so many vets HATE to go to the V.A. is because they have to repeatedly answer the SAME questions befor an old civilian that doesn’t have a clue as to what they have been through. They answer and answer and answer and STILL the same questions are asked over and over and over. …huh…no I can’t say that…what?..o.k… These guys here want to know what difference it makes as to HOW you are disabled and in what fashion? They served their country and still pay taxes and YOU make more than they do, so why does it matter? You are free to walk and talk and socialize with others and because they can’t, you want to know why?! They proved themselves once and that should be enough. We are going back to lurking. I have never once heard a local say that they were perfectly satisfied to be making several orders of magnitude less than their coworkers doing the same job. Hell, I never heard anybody anywhere say they were happy with their current salary. Would you, RosieWolf, happily work, in, say, a clothing factury in the Philippines for $30/month? I didn’t think so. Do you believe that the cost of electricity and medicine, to name just two items, are 50 times less in the Philippines than they are in the USA? I didn’t think so. As this particular thread, which didn’t exactly start out on a high level to begin with, has devolved mainly to a lot of incoherent shouting, I’ll bow out here. If anyone wants to debate these points further, let’s start a new thread in GD. ---

Rocket… I never said their life was enhanced by my measly five bucks… but they didnt spit on it either. my five buck tip was a monthly wage for most of these folks, and they were grateful. That was the limit of their economy at the time. They were happy, I (we) were happy… everyone got along… and damn… this is before Al invented the internet… God Bless him… LOL… ---

Being a Navy Diver with a salvage code number, I never pulled a full tour. Just went there for the job. I worked for the SEABEES and UDT as a demolitions advisor, and I was damned good at it. In '66, I got a punctured lung from a motar attack when I was in the water. Never got a Purple Heart for it because it wasn’t properly documented. Documentation is all. Fortunatly, my busted spine and knee is on paper, although I am sitll able to walk. Today, if it wasn’t for Social Security, I wouldn’t be able to eat. Ya see, there were some more injurys, service connected, that I foolishly ignored (me big, tough man. Me don’t feel it). Today, these are coming back to haunt me with artritis. And now, I have bone spurs in my spine from the fusions. I too, served 10 years and would have been a lifer except… I am willing to take at your word for it until documentation says otherwise. But listen to me. I have broken a rule tonight. I have told a war story, which I never do except among my bros. Please, do not ever claim that you do not have, and if you have it, share it only with those who have been there. Wishing luck ---

If he had his legs removed his disability would be rated under a code which would not only pay him more than the regular disability but also list him as permanently and totally disabled. Conditions listed under the “loss of use of”, which your friend automatically would be, are never examined for improvement or worsening as far as his monthly benefit is concerned. The VA isn’t so stupid to think a leg or an eye is going to grow back. He is either very mistaken or. . . . uh. . . . pulling your leg. (sorry) As far as PTSD (is that what you meant by PTSS?), it most certainly is not easily granted. In fact, PTSD claims take the longest to grant because of the vast amount of military research that must be done in order to verify military stressors. These stressors must be shown before a PTSD claim can be granted. It is a lot more complicated thn obtaining service medical records, setting the vet up for an examination, and then making a connection between the injury in service and the current disability. Wardensu - You and your little panel of veterans from your small apartment complex who just _happened_ to drop by (yeah, right) :rolleyes: shouldn’t have to have me point out the irony in your “still paying taxes like you Diane” comment when in fact all VA benefits are non-taxable and most states have a property tax abatement for disabled vets. Should I mention your education, medical, and homeloan benefits on top of that? Isn’t it odd that Wardensu and Rosie both have the same posting style, especially with the . . . . 's I hope like hell it is her sock puppet and that there aren’t two of them in the world. Oh, and speaking from personal experience, I really hope that everyone here realizes that Rosie and Wardensu are not your typical vet. Most are intelligent, rational, **normal** human beings instead of the embarassing excuses of human waste these two (two?) represent. ---

This is The United States of America. Doesn’t matter what the younger generation thinks about sacrifice and giving of themselves. They are allowed to believe their ideas because of the “giving” of their elders. All of us have children, and all our children will have them also. The fact that so many different ideas are born out of conflict should show all that Democracy IS the best way to go. You can serve your country, without being an active “vet” but need to keep in mind that we all fight for the same freedoms. The ones at home are as active as the soldier in the field. The parents of the killed soldiers of the U.S.S. Cole are as heartsick as the parents of any war that lost a child. Our military is all over the world inforcing “peace” and being killed by snipers and mines the same as the civilians that they are protecting. The U.S. news does not report the everyday ‘accidents’ overseas that take lives of our young military soldiers because it is not “newsworthy”. Ask any parent with a soldier(male/female) in the armed forces today where their child is. The fear of their child is the same as if they were in a war-bombed area. Sometimes the enemy is a quiet trip-wire or a bottle of poisen wine. I know. My _daughter_ served in Bosnia and was on her way to Kosova when her enlistment was up. Want her military record? My point is…America is the land of the free…I was not born in the Philipeans where the lifestyle is $30 a month. I do not work for Kathy Lee. I do NOT buy her clothes. I was not born in Bangalesh…I do NOT live on a bowl of rice a day and still give birth to children which I cannot feed. I was born in the United States of America. I stand by the freedoms that were granted me by birth, and give my children to serve their time for these freedoms, as does many parents of many children that are serving for YOUR freedoms. Diane… I pray to God that my child NEVER has to go to such an uncaring bitch as yourself if she should ever need V.A. assistance. She is in the Reserves now. She joined as soon as her active duty from the Navy C.B.s’ was up. She is 22 yrs. old, weighs 107 lbs, and is a heavy machinery operator. She had to sit on a blanket to operate a bulldozer in Bosnia to grate the roads back in place after bombing that doesn’t exist goes on. She wrote home about the train trips through the countries where they were told to close the curtains on the windows on the train, so that they wouldn’t see the children and villagers with only particle limbs. So many mine fields around ya know.?! She told me that she was in Budapest befor she saw a child with both arms and legs intact. My daughter works at a \*real job \* and PAYS TAXES to the government which you claim to work for, and also is active military. Many vets work "under-the-table for monetary gain and neccesary family gain. The Govn’t bylines leave NO choice. “capiche’”? From myself and my daughter and “this little panal of veterans” that have been keeping up with your beaurocratic meanderings we have only to say that at least you are NOT in our neck of the woods, and we will all hold weekly prayer group meeting for you safe dissmisal from whatever community you claim to serve. God bless your patients. Help is on the way.! I’m sure that you use the same compassion and gracious language with the poor old vets that you tend, as you show that you do on this board. I have the utmost respect for them, and can truly appreciate the sacrafices they have made. After having read this thread, I don’t believe that any of the people who have responded (save one) harbor a lack respect toward veterans.
