The problem is that you get that result for your first search. Or I have, anyway (no, not all the time, but enough. And no, I didn’t go to ‘new posts’ that actually counts as a search before doing my search). OP, your best bet is to use google to search the board. To do this, type in whatever you want to search for, put a space and then type site:boards.straightdope.com So if I were going to search the board for, I dunno, poop robots, my search bar would have: poop robots site:boards.straightdope.com Or if I wanted to make sure that poop robots was treated as a phrase: “poop robots” site:boards.straightdope.com OR if I didn’t want that phrase, but just wanted to find posts/threads that mentioned _both_ poop and robots: “poop” “robots” site:boards.straightdope.com [sub]I don’t have a robot-scat fetish, I swear.[/sub] ---

Question: is this board unique in having this incredibly frustrating limitation on searches? I’ve never come across it before myself. If they could improve one thing here that would be my choice, it’s so damned annoying. ---

The built-in search function sucks on all vBulletin-based boards. Some may allow you to use it more often than we do, but why would you want to? ---

Someone in a previous ATMB thread posted a bit of code and I’m sorry, I don’t have your username at hand so I apologize for the lack of authorship. javascript:void(location.href='[Google](https://www.google.com/?q=site:boards.straightdope.com#q=site:boards.straightdope.com%20'+prompt(%22Enter%20your%20search%20terms:%22))) Copy that and past it in the URL space of a bookmark and you will have a nifty button to click to search the boards via google. ---

When I google or use another search engine outside of “Straight Dope” I put it in quotation marks, and whatever else I wanted to find. Works great, and no waiting. ---
