This is why we can't have nice things: asshole tourists in Japan

Yeah, whatever. Go on and cry about it. See how far it gets you, you eugenicist shitwit.

Keep being passive aggressive and they’ll eventually figure it out. It may take a while.

I don’t know, have you tried trolling harder?

It’s taking longer than we thought.

If you really think that the Earth isn’t massively overpopulated you are a fucking moron.

The Earth is already operating beyond its capacity to sustainably support the global population, according to new research highlighting growing strain on food systems, climate stability, and human well-being. Despite this, researchers say that slowing population growth and increasing global awareness could still help reduce long-term risks.

Published in Environmental Research Letters, the study concludes that human activity has exceeded the planet’s long-term limits. If current patterns of consumption continue, environmental and social pressures are expected to intensify across the world.

The issue is how to reduce population without crashing an economic system that demands continuous growth.

We have threads and threads on that.

Yes, this. And saying that the Earth’s human population needs to be somewhat less does not make one a “eugenicist shitwit.” Talk about an overreaction on someone’s part.

You’re right. I apologize.

It makes you an eco-fascist shitwit.

Maybe not THE crappiest apology I’ve ever seen, but definitely in the top 12.87%.

Well, you do you, sunshine. Fuck the environment, amiright?

See, now that right there is the thing.

I read:

the study concludes that human activity has exceeded the planet’s long-term limits. If current patterns of consumption continue, environmental and social pressures are expected to intensify across the world.

…and I think, “Well, gee, I guess we ought to change our patterns of consumption, maybe move to more sustainable/less environmental taxing forms of energy, make cities more livable so that people can get around without the need for gas-powered cars and open arable farmland for agriculture, and better yet stop growing crops to feed methane-producing cattle (less livestock, more agriculture), etc, etc. We could make our societies more equitable while we’re at it. Call it a ‘green new deal’ or something.”

Or, you know, we could just go on about how “dangerously overpopulated” the Earth is, as if that’s not a call for de-population. At which point, well, I have to ask: de-populate where? And whom? What sort of people do you suggest we “wind down” and how?

It’s eco-fascist propaganda. It’s just one step removed from eugenics.

I mean, really, fuck every last one of you who still can’t make those connections.

It could just be a call for letting demographic collapse run its course. No eugenics required.

I suppose ultimately it depends on whether your world view is that humanity is too stupid and selfish to do wise things, and is therefore doomed to collectively do stupid shortsighted things which mostly involve fighting, stealing, or both.

Or the opposite: we can grow up as a global civilization, adopt long term communitarian thinking, and manage our way past AGW, ecological collapse, overpopulation, resource depletions, etc., in ways that will last.

I really really want it to be Door #2. Maybe it’s my age talking more and more, but I’m just not seeing that happening. We’ve collectively chosen the next probably 50 years to be a time of populist authoritarian no-nothing resurgence almost worldwide. Whatever window of opportunity there may be now, our cultural momentum suggests to me that we (all humanity) is going to epically squander it.

If that’s the solution, then there is no problem. It’s like screaming, “Oh my god, we’re driving dangerously fast!” at the first sight of a T-intersection ahead, completely ignoring the fact that it’s still a mile away, the driver is driving the posted speed limit and seems fully aware of and responsive to their surroundings (not driving erratically), and there is every expectation they will stop on time and turn when proceeding. Because, you know, if the driver keeps going down this trajectory at 30 miles an hour indefinitely… they’ll crash into a brick wall on the other side of the T-intersection.

So, no, I don’t see assertions that the world is “dangerously overpopulated” as mere observations that everything will be fine as long as we let demographic collapse run its course.
