My office mate bought a microwave about two years ago, I think she got it from CostCo. It was not expensive. The door says it was made by Sylvania. It needs an exorcism.

_beep!_

It beeps at random. Sometimes it’s a single beep, occasionally it lets out a stream of beeps, or a little cluster of them. Sometimes the number 1 appears on the display when it beeps. More often the display goes blank. It can’t be morse code because all the beeps are the same length.

_beep!_
The only way to convince it to cook food is to reboot the crazy thing, since the beeping locks it up.

It started doing this last summer. Then it quit for many months and behaved normally. Now it’s doing it again.
_beep beep!_

I sit with my back to the microwave, but I do not trust it.
_beep!_

When microwaves first came on the market, my friend’s grandmother (80 years old, lived all her life on a farm in the middle of Canada) refused to have one in her house. She said, and I quote, it was “the work of the devil”. So I guess she was right…

Perhaps they are randomly installing poltergeists at the microwave oven factory now.

My sister just junked one that would randomly turn itself on for about 30 seconds. She discovered this one night when it came on while she was up going to the bathroom.

Unless her dogs have developed opposable thumbs, the thing was posessed.
