You’ve already noted that Obama supporters didn’t believe him on gay marriage. I don’t think this would have damaged him significantly – his supporters liked him a lot, but almost all would not have been shocked that he’s done politically expedient things at times. It certainly wouldn’t have put a dent in his black support and sky-high black turnout. ---

Lifelong Democrats supported him because he was a Democrat. But he also won a significant number of people, mainly the young, who thought he was different, not just from Bush, but also different from Clinton. They were wrong. I don’t think anyone could cite even one thing Obama has done that Clinton wouldn’t have if she’d won. Obama=Clinton in every way that matters. ---

Trump likes Putin and puts our treaty commitments in doubt. Putin may throw a tantrum if Clinton is elected, but he won’t mess with the USA while she’s President. It doesn’t hurt that Democrats have taken Russian meddling personally, You can mess with the USA, but don’t ever mess with the Democratic Party’s political interests.
