I don’t think the tea partiers are generally racists. But I do think that they and conservatives in general have a hyperactive sense of conflict. They have a melodramatic or mythological view of the world in which they define themselves as Heroes fighting against Evil. And so their political opponents are roped into the role of Evil Enemy. They also feel the need to make more and more outrageous accusations, because such escalationis needed to maintain the level of hysteria, and becuase the more evil the opponent you unseated is, the bigger the hero you are. ---
