Exactly. Normal mainstream Christians are just not that interesting. We are imperfect people like everyone else. Does anyone remember that episode of Wife Swap or Meet your new mommy (I don’t watch alot of network stuff so I am not sure which one it is) that had this woman on there who was screaming about Satan being in her house, the devil’s money, etc because she had switched with someone who believed in astrology. It was quite a spectacle. People really do believe that is mainstream. That was one of the only times I really did get upset at how Christians are shown. Maybe 10% are truely way out in left field (the Phelps camp is not even in the field anymore). The rest of us are just here doing the best we can. ---

Re: horned Jews: Quite a few movies made during WWII were either thinly disguised propaganda or were throroughly laced with propaganda. (Either in the sense of “Allies Good/Axis Evil” OR in the sense of building solidarity among the home folks.) I have seen more than one movie from that era in which the token farm boy in the outfit meets the token Jew in the outfit and they have a discussion in which it is revealed to the farm boy that Jews do not _really_ have horns. I have only met one person who had to be informed that Jews do not have horns–and that was back in the 1960s. ---

A friend once related to me how someone once told him that the reason there are blacks was because one of Noah’s sons gave him a blow job. I’m still trying to figure out how a guy who got nailed to a tree on a Friday evening (or Saturday morning, if you believe he was tortured all night) and rises from the grave on Sunday can be said to be dead for 3 days. Of course, my all time favorite whacky religious concept is the one exposed by Peter Griffin when he says, “Christmas is the time when Jesus rising from the grave to feast upon the living.” 😃 ---

I always assumed it had to do with an archaic way of counting days. When I took Latin in high school, we learned to write dates like (as near as I can remember): a.d. III Id. Mar. Meaning three days before the Ides of March (March 15th). Only, that meant March 13th, because the Romans counted “13th, 14th, 15th – three days before” whereas we would count “15 minus 13 = two days before.” So maybe the early Christians used a similar system. This is basically an educated guess on my part, though. ---

I read histories of the Hebrew language many years ago. I don’t remember exactly which book I read this in, it might have been _Hebrew, the Eternal Language_ by William Chomsky, anyway I’m pretty sure the author was Jewish. He said that Michelangelo put horns on Moses not out of an attempt to demonize Jews (after all, Christians are supposed to venerate Moses, right?) but because of Jerome’s mistranslation. The Hebrew word קֶרֶן _qeren_ was used to mean ‘rays of light’ in Hebrew, but Jerome didn’t know it had any meaning besides the literal one, ‘horn’. Incidentally, the resemblance of _qeren_ to Latin _cornu_ and other related Indo-European words meaning ‘horn’ is one of the things that led some to speculate on a possible relationship of Indo-European to Afro-Asiatic, for example in the Nostratic hypothesis. Maybe it would be a better bet not to attribute malice aforethought to Jerome and Michelangelo, maybe their blunder was due to simple ignorance of Hebrew. ---

My favourite is that a friend of mine admitted that, when she was young and living in a very small town, she believed Jews had superpowers. See, the only Jews she knew about were the Old Testament Jews, like Moses, who parted the Red Sea, etc. She was shocked to learn, when she was older, that there were still Jews around. ---
