Those Special Albums (does anyone else share this concept?)

I’m listening to my most recent find right now. I picked up Boards of Canada’s Music Has The Right To Children a couple weeks ago and was totally blown away by it. It almost feels more like some sort of strange living organism than an album.

  1. Pinback (Self titled)
  2. The Misfits (Walk Among Us)
  3. At The Drive In (El Gran Orgo)
  1. Neil Young - Tonight’s the Night

  2. Otis Redding - Pain in My Heart

  3. Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story

I highly recommend you also pick up Geogaddi and The Campfire Headphase, and the A Beautiful Place in the Country EP, if you can find it.

Screaming for My Supper – Beth Hart from a place of pain
Wrong Way Up – Eno/Cale, a weird blend or ordinary
Song from the Wood – my favorite Tull
Never Turn Your Back on a Friend – Budgie at their most accessible

Wrong Way Up is a phenomenal album. One of the best of the late 80s. I love it dearly.

Gotta buck the trend here and say Isn’t Anything by MBV
others that reawakened my inner ear:
Raping a Slave by Swans
Century Flower by Shelleyan Orphan
Within the Realm of a Dying Sun by Dead Can Dance

That one knocked me for a loop too. It seemed to come out of some completely unknown place. (And given your username, I would have been surprised if you hadn’t mentioned it!)

Beggar’s Banquet… Rolling Stones
Revolver…Beatles
Ummagumma…Pink Floyd (acid days, what can I say, but I can still groove with it and a pick)
Skylarking…XTC
A True Wizard, a True Star…Todd Rundgren
Heroes…David Bowie

Forgot an important one
On the Beach…Neil Young (Vampire Blues baby)

In no particular order:

1] Slang-Def Leppard. IMO, this is the BEST album they’ve ever done. “Pearl of Euphoria” just makes me all kinds of happy.

2] (tie) Test For Echo/Hold Your Fire-Rush. Especially “Virtuality” from TFE and “Turn The Page” from HYF. I saw a clip of Neil playing to “Virtuality” on youTube and have loved the track ever since.

3] Abbey Road-The Beatles

The Beatles - Please Please Me. I got this when it came out and it was the beginning of modern music. A life changer. It’s not great music, but a marker, a sign post.

The year 1967. Another changing point. After listening to Sgt Pepper, nothing was the same. There were many other albums from around that year that just made me go: wow.

Pink Floyd - A Saucerful Of Secrets. Another landmark album.

Klaus Schulze - Moondawn. This - and most of his other stuff - showed that you can create a largely unchanging drone that lasts for 30 - 60 minutes and make it exciting and moving.

Slowdive - Just For A Day (extended version with the early singles included). Although several posters have chosen MBV, this group made noises with guitars that has never been equalled.

Are You Experienced-Jimi Hendrix. I wasn’t even born yet when it was released. I discovered it in the 80’s not long after I discovered weed (coincidence?). It was my first introduction to 60’s rock aside from the usual classic rock radio standards.

I remember when “Purple Haze” hit the charts… I was only 11 but I could still tell that it represented a breakthrough into some kind of new territory… like, “These guys have gone BEYOND.”
